Hello, all— I'm helping out a friend at a "remote" gig and have cobbled together some of my gear and some of his. We have to track drums; we have a decent room and good mics but limited pres and lackluster converters and clocking apparatus. So, I'm seeking advice on how you'd use the resources we've got. Here's the breakdown: • We need 10 inputs: OH L & R; Kick (just one mic); Snare Top & Bottom; Two toms—rack and floor; Hat; Ride, FOK. • Good pres: 2 channels of API (512c); 2 channels of BAE 312A; 1 channel GR ME-NV1 • Decent pres: 2 channels RNP • Bad pres: Lots o' Octopre, MOTU 896, DIGI 002 So, what advice do we have on which pres to use for which kit pieces? Also: If we use the Octopre, I'll have to use it to clock the 002 and send its inputs via ADAT. (Argh...) What's the best clock of the bunch—Octo? MOTU896? 002? Like I said, I'm doing triage here—very spur-o-the moment. ANY advice appreciated. Many thanks, as always. D. |

| I'd be more worried about the mics than which pre-amps they get plugged into.... It sounds like a lot of channels you want there. None of the pre-amps you name there are really "bad" unless you're quite a snob. The question is how you get it all into the box. If it's an 896HD, youve got 8 decent pre-amps and converters there, you can bypass the pre's on a couple channels and use the wordclock out and the AES digital inputs - 10 channels..... Find what works on the OH and snare. After that, keep the rest out of the red and spend your time on mic choice and placement. -tINY |

Thanks. I'm not a snob; can't afford to be. Here are the mics: OH: KSM-32s Kick: D6 or D112 Sn Top: 57 Sn Bottom: i5 Toms: 421s FOK: Gefell UMT70S Hat and Ride: KM-184 Not great, but decent. Any other advice? Many thanks... |

I'd personally go i5 on top (a bit further than you'd put a 57) and the 57 on bottom. i5 is a great top snare mic in my opinion.

| You'll be fine... That 896HD has ADAT inputsa as well. I think that should be your center-piece for conversion if you don't have something else you haven't mentioned. You might want to try deleting the FOK and the separate ride cymbal (your overheads are fine in a good room - maybe out in front of the kit a little). That way you have 8 channels. Alternately, you could delete the tom mics, depending on what style of music you're doing this for...... -tINY |
