Question Which concert DVD for mix reference?

Helloooo,

Gunna be doing another live conert mix for DVD v soon. Can't wait.

Was wondering about reference material? Its soft-ish rock-ish stuff.

Which DVD's sound really really really really great in the genre? Personal favs? The high watermark is______?

Any thoughts great appreciated,

I do not have many Concert DVD's but the Peter Gabriel Secret World sounds pretty good to me...

My Recordings/Credits

try Toy Matinee...

it boasts brilliant recording by Bill Bottrell, exquisitely mixed to 5.1 by Eliot Scheiner, mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway....ahem. not a bad combo.

LOVE Peter Gabriel! can't go wrong there.

A vote for "Seven Worlds Collide", a live DVD featuring Neil Finn (Crowded House) and illustrious friends in concert. Mixed by Bob Clearmountain.

Assuming you mean the concert done in the last couple of years from Melbourne. Listened to this tonight in great detail and compared it with Hell Freezes Over from 10 years or so ago.

I was staggered at how bad the new DVD sounds compared to HFO. The track that it really shows is "I can't tell you why". Listen and compare the drum sounds in particular, as well as guitar solo at the end. Mind you, the new guitarist is not a patch on Don Felder for musicianship.

This new all digital production sounds really lifeless, no depth, no air, compressed and uninteresting. I can't believe how much this production team and the result has gone backwards. Everyone must be checking their brains and ears in at the door before starting work.

Or am I wrong?

For great live sound I've been found of Standing In The Shadows Of Motown and Cream, Live from Royal Albert Hall.

I've had the experience of broadcasting a live concert from the Royal Oak Music Theater [Great acoustics for modern music] where Standing In the Shadows was shot and I am more than a little familiar with the performers. That was a great capture...

...and what can I say? I'm still a HUGE Cream fan and I'd probably love it if it was recorded on a cassette. But that comment not withstanding I thought it was a great capture.

Concert for George is an excellent one, the best I've ever heard, however, is Paul Simons "you're the one" live in Paris, not only excellently recorded, but a wonderful band Steve Gadd et al..

I detest most of the music on it but the mix and performances are very good: P*U*L*S*E from Floyd

And the ones from peter gabriel aren't bad either!

Somehow I always liked the Marillion Marbles on the road dvd sound in surround (or stereo)

and how could I totally forgot the Pat metheny group stuff !

Imaginary Day live and The Way Up live are very good and probably one of the best mixes I heared. I always use them to demo hometheaters (but somehow I forgot to mention them in this topic :S)

One of my favorites is Tori Amos "Welcome to Sunny Florida, Live in Miami".
It really has a high quality sound and visuals as well. I had the opportunity to see one of the gigs of that tour here in Florence, and as far as I can remember it was one of the best sounding indoor live shows I've seen. Her sound guy, Mark Hawley did the recording on a PT rig, and also handles her studio work (which to me sounds amazing and it's one of my references), on top of "handling her" being that he's the husband...(I hope that if he happens to be around here in the forum he doesn't mind me saying he's a "very lucky bastard"... ).

I also have the Growing Up live DVD from Peter Gabriel, and though it sounds good, it's a bit "too live" for my tastes, too much ambient and crowd level (I've see that show too...).

A bit different in music style is the Diana Krall Live in Paris. That's a really exquisite jazz DVD, recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt.
