Talking OK Oldtimers

All you old remote guys (and Wittman, too), can any of you correctly identify this Remote Truck (it recorded many classic live albums)? I'll give hints only if I have to.

Sorry, didn't mean to tease.

And Damn, that's no Mercedes, looks more liek the front end of a Lincoln about the same vintage as the Caddy. Never mind. Gee, My mom told me that when I was a mere 3 or 4 year old I could identify all the cars on the road... That was abotu the year of that Caddy, too. I'm slipping.

I'd like to know more too!

Did it contain a Sphere or Helios? Seems to me I've seen pics of that truck before...

1st clue

Remoteness is on the right track thinking of the "royalty" of remote recording. The picture was taken in 1979 behind Bearsville studios.

I want to say Fedco, but I don't remember that truck being painted blue...

Come on DB, give us a few more hints -- keep them difficult, but lay a few on us my man!

I believe Thomas Edison used this to record The Grateful Dead.

Or maybe Henry Ford since it's a Ford truck.

Ok, an easy hint

"Wait ! it's 6 o' clock in the morning! And we've recorded it all! And you're in it and we're in it, and that will be our third album. Thank you ..."

Easier?

The quote was said on March 13, 1971, a really great date in remote recording history, probably sounded a lot like this at the gig:

See when I said AB I was sure it was him... With his buddy LD. Didn't they both have a remote truck at the time or was it later in time.

I remember in the late 70s AB had the TV Music truck with a Harrison console from Scharff at the time...

You're killin' me my man!

What about Aaron Baron and Larry Dalhstrom? Great engineer's. Right?

Yes, it's Aaron Baron and Larry Dahlstrom's Location Recorders Truck that recorded The Allman Brothers Band "At Fillmore East", B.B.King "Live in Cook County Jail", "Chicago at Carnegie Hall", Blue Oyster Cult "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees", Todd Rundgren "Another Live", and Wet Willie "Drippin' Wet" among others.

Thanks for the answer. I knew who it was but couldn't recall the name of the truck.

Didn't it end up as part of Bearsville, but eventually they junked it?

Sad, but true

Yeah, Mark, that's true. I believe the last gig it ever did was at Frivilous Sal's in Poughkeepsie in the early '80's recording a band called "Breaker 1-9".

OK now that we've come this far and since I'm a big fan of that AB Filmore thing - What kind of recording board and equipment was in the truck?!

Location Recorders

I was the assistant engineer on that truck with Larry and Aaron for several years while I lived in Bearsville, from 1971 to 1973 or so. We were parked outside Carnegie Hall for lots of recordings. I don't remember it being blue.

I'd love to find those guys again. Lot's of great stories...

More info:

We also recorded:

Live Simon (7 nights at Carnegie Hall with Paul Simon)
Rod McKuen
Josephine Baker
Steve Allen Show
Charlie Mingus
all at Carnegie Hall.

Lot's of other albums too, like the Fania All Stars at Yankee Stadium, Todd Rundgen at Wollman Rink, Sly & The Family Stone, Eagles there too.

It was pretty amazing.

I forget what we had in there, equipment-wise.

Aaron Baron

My dad, Aaron Baron, is sitting next to me at my house in Woodstock here in 2007. He wants to say he is still alive as is Larry, remarkably. They are both retired now but as cranky as ever. I asked him about his gear on the truck that did those records, here's what he said:

Console was custom made with Quad 8 components designed by Bill Windsor. It was unusual in that it had 16 busses and 16 linear inputs and 8 rotary.

The dual multitrack tape machines were both 3M 56's with 16-track head heads. He said "we never had 24 tracks". My dad says that 24 track sucked because you had to buy noise reduction...etc...

They had one 2-track MCI custom built. Apparently, Larry and the gang built it themselves.

The monitors were Altec 604e's with JBL bullets for extended high end. They were powered by Macintosh amps.

The original truck only had 2 limiters - of the LA2 variety.

The Allman Brother's live record used more inputs than they had (at that point they only had 16 inputs). The drums were submixed on two Shure M67 mixes with the exception of the kicks which went into the main console.

BB King at Cook County Jail was recorded entirely on Shure microphones because they had excessive wind problems at the site. They tried a ton of their other mics and ended up with 57's with A2WS windscreens, SM5b, and a 58 for vocal.

The microphone compliment during the early 70s included the Shure mics, U87s, 414, RE15 & 16s, Sony C37fet's, AKG 451's.

If you have any questions or just want to say hello, my dad's email is:

aabaron@comcast.net

My dad got a big kick out of reading this stuff - thanks a lot.

David
