Talking Horrowitz recordings

Alot of my favorite recordings are horrowitz recordings, anyone here have any idea what micing technique is used in his recordings? I can post a sample mp3 if needed.

Curious -- Which Horrowitz (Horowitz) are you refering to?
Depending on the circle you hang around is it Lionel, Vladimir or Michael?

Thanks!

... and on a related topic, my two favorite piano recordings (in terms of the piano sound itself) are

Marc Hamelin (Alkan, both CDs, can't remember the label)

Oliver Jones (with Skip Bey, "Then and now", Justin Time)

If anyone learns those miking techniques and recording chain, that to me would be wonderful.

Smile Horowitz Rachs!

My favorite recording is Vladimir doing the Rach 3 at Carnegie Hall in 78'. I think by this time it was popular to use three mics. Usuall modified U-47s. I not sure how they were set up. Do some surfing, maybe you'll find the some history behind a specific recording.

You might want to do some research to the history of RCA Victors recordings. Here's a quote from a Living Stereo series SACD:

"RCA Victor's first two-track sessions in late 1953 and early 1954 were captured on proprietary RCA RT-21 1/4" 30 ips tape machines, wired to a pair of mono mixers, each dedicated to one tape track. Neumann U-47 cardioid and M-49/50 omnidirectional microphones were favored, as were RCA-designed LC-1A 15" duo-cone speakers in the control room. Three track recordings were realized on tube amplifier Ampex 300-3 1/2" machines running at 15ips and in later years at 30ips, and were mixed down to 1/4" two-track masters."

Good luck,
Mike p~
