Hello,
Has anybody tried out sontronics apollo with chimera pre on trumpet.
I have to record trumpet and have the opportunity to try this combo of mic and pre.
I'm also really afraid of placing the ribbon too close to the bell of the trumpet, as suggested here by some of you (the mic is not mine). But I also have red a lot about the beautiful sound you can get by close micking with a ribbon.
I don't know...

Any idea what kind of horn the player will use? Specs on the instrument itself may give you a clue as to what sound you are going to get.

(i.e. bell/bore size/type, material, etc)

If the player has an awesome Maynard Ferguson tone going on, it'd be a shame to roll off all those highs. Conversely, thinning out a nice dark/round sound would do a disservice.

+1 on the no compresson (limiting, sure). too much risk of losing the mojo.

My 2 cents (as a trumpet player)

Cheers,
Lane

I've used a very fragile B&O BM-3 on trumpet several times with no problems. Sounds amazing - my go-to mic for jazz trumpet.

I'd recommend using a large diaphragm microphone capable of a SPL greater than 120. Then place the mic dead straight in front of the trumpet about 50 - 100 centimeters away from the "Mouth" of the trumpet.

That yielded a great result as we recorded the great trumpet player "Lew Soloff"

You could also add an additional mic above the pipes where the fingers are. That gives you additional control of the sound. Very handy for clarinets and saxophones as well.

Good Luck

I love using ribbons on trumpet.

Royer R121 sounds fabulous on trumpet.

The music will help determine placement (lead part, solo, aggressive, etc.).
I play trumpet...have used many different mics, all with good results, including RCA-44 (probably my favorite) RCA-77,BK-11, Coles, Beyer 160, Royer 121, and one side of the SF-12 (SF-12 really nice, too). Since I got the AEA TRP pre that's the go to for the ribbons, with my Millennia HV-3 with
the optional inputs for ribbons #2. I've also used a TLM-170 with good results. I personally play with intensity and find that the trumpet on axis with the mic capsule/ribbon is sometimes not the most flattering tone. Tilt the ribbon a little and get the player a foot, 18" away and there is plenty of
presence. I have made convincing overdubs with the bell 2 to 4 feet (!) from the mic. Lots of air in the sound makes the trumpet big. Always hated dates where engineers used 57 type mics close to bell--why even practice. PM me if you want to talk more.

I agree with the "slightly off-axis" thing. Directly into any mic, I think trumpet sounds harsh and very bright, especially LDCs.
