I have never had any problems travelling from Australia with gear, but I've always had a carnet form. The danger with this system is that not all countries follow this system, especially in Asia, so it pays to do some research. The other wrinkle is that customs in the country of origin can use the system to check that you don't buy gear overseas and try to sneak it back into the country without the usual duties/taxes etc being coughed up.

Good luck
Cheers,
Tim

ahhh ok, a carnet form is like a authorized inventory of what you are travelling with?

First, inventory the stuff you want to leave the country with.

Model#, serial #, value, dimensions, weight, general description

(use a spreadsheet program, lke Quattro Pro / Excel)

Call customs in your country to see what the procedure is. More than likely, they're gonna ask for the above list, and have you show up at the airport/border crossing 2-3 hrs before usual, during bizniz hrs to issue a carnet.
