i posted on the other thread, but i'd like to reiterate...am i crazy? billy joel doesn't get the choice as to whether they use auto-tune or not? i mean...REALLY? that seems to me like if someone threw a behringer guitar amp on stage and told ted nugent to deal with it...

so...people get forced to use auto-tune huh? man, this world really sucks if a guy with that track record doesn't have the choice of whether he wants to sound like a robot or not...

i'm also shocked that a bunch of gear heads would blame engineers! c'mon guys....blame the artist! ehhe

I saw Billy Joel in concert last year. No sign of autotune there.

It's pretty ridiculous doing that to a performer who has been playin since long before this technology even existed!

If it was paris hilton, yeah! But come on!

Thank god I didn't start watching til half time.

Praise the Lord for GS.

I kept thinking, "why is an old pro like Billy Joel sounding this off ?"

The fly-over at the end was perfect though !

Why do they even bother having men sing at sporting events? Belinda Carlisle, with the incredible receding miniskirt, Lucy Lawless, with the incredible topless top, and Taylor Swift, with the incredible voice, all kicked the sh** out of Billy Joel. But his piano playing was nice.

Oh get over it -

Listen to the mans music over the last 30 odd years. Amazing. Lullaby (Good Night My Angel) still brings tears to my eyes when I look at my kids and it's playing.

He's not spent his life "talking small talk" on blogs and forums - he's been out there writing part of the American song book.

Big deal some (dick brain engineer) who Billy has never met and never will - (the person to blame probably reads this forum) used auto-tune and set it wrong.

Joel like a pro sang through the problem and didn't look even slightly phased infront of 90 million people - I would of gone to pieces and crapped my pants.

He didn't give a shit he's has nothing to prove. Nothing. Especially not to people like you!

This thread is DEFINATLEY the worse side of Gearslutz.

in a word pathetic, childish thread. dfegad

Just so you know, I originally posted this thread in the Moan Zone, it wasn't moved here. So, number 1, if you ain't here to moan, bugger off (although I suppose "counter-moaning" counts.)

So, we witness possibly the worst display of public auto-tuning in history on the biggest television event of the year, and we're not supposed to discuss it here on Gearslutz?

For many, this fiasco was a good learning tool. It displayed the extent of damage improper usage of auto-tune could do, and I'm sure many engineers learned something from watching the video under scrutiny.

I would consider it a feat if anybody here is a bigger Billy Joel fan than I am. I think he's the greatest songwriter of all time. Perhaps that's why I was so pissed off when I heard him being butchered by auto-tune.

We flame a lot of "big" names on here. Why? Cuz we know they don't give a shit about what we think! If anything, it's a testiment to their greatness. Most of the comments on here are meant to be taken in a technical or professional manner, even if they aren't worded as such. "That Avril Lavigne bitch deserves to die" is probably not something I would say if I knew actually knew her. But that's how I feel about "the character she plays on TV." It's the nature of the beast; Nothing personal.

As far as the poor engineer who did it, well, we all make mistakes, but if I slipped on a banana peel and fell on my face while my pants fell down and a bird was crapping on my head, I wouldn't hold it against even the most decent of people to point and laugh. It is what it is.

Then why do you?

You're taking a public discussion of the technical aspects surrounding someones performance WAY too personal.

Judging by his interview, if he had a GS account, he would come on here posting something like "haha that was kind of ****ed up, I sounded like a robot!"

First of all buttercup, no one is saying a lousy/f'ed up performance at the SB has ANYTHING to do with his previous body of work. In fact, it could be said that BECAUSE he has such an impressive body of work that we as fans/listeners had higher expectations from him. We might expect bad autotuning if it was Ashlee Simpson singing the national anthem, but not Billy.

Wow. You really think that an artist of Billy Joel's stature who is about to sing in front of a billion viewers isn't aware of every aspect of his performance, including who his engineer is and what they're using on him? Thanks for playing, try again.

No one here said he DID have anything to prove to us. So does that mean, o Holier Than Thou, that we're not allowed to comment on the performance, even if it was bad? You obviously choose to ignore all the threads where people praise or rave about good performances.

I would much rather listen to the man sing a little out of tune here and there than try to be a slick prick and fall on his arse... And as for your disdain for our opinions, you are completely entitled whether we agree or disagree. This is still a free country...for now anyway.

As far as having nothing to prove, I disagree. He's in the RnR hall of fame. He's supposed to be great. He wasn't. He has a responsibility and obligation to those that put him on that pedestal. He could have refused the induction if he felt he wasn't GREAT or WORTHY. Either you iz or you ain't. He won't and Prince WUZ. End of story.

Sometimes history is the best litany test of all. When this is looked upon through the eyes of history Prince will be remembered as a genious composer, phenomenal performer and musician... a true one of a kind trend setter and Billy... well he's in the RnR hall of fame right?

"Don't Go Changing"

Peace!

True..what normal person wouldn't.
but celebs aren't "normal" are they?

But seriously, PR Comes w/ the job.
and this biz IS idiotic and ********
most overpaid celebs are smart about it, know this and play the game.
Not a high price condsidering the sick amounts of money these folks get paid.
Ive done my fair share of press junket stuff in my 20 plus years in this biz.
I shed NO tears for the high maintianence celebs who are bitchy about doing press..
I do a lot of film/TV stuff..ive seen an actress/ model get a 1 mil paycheck for 2 days work on a shampoo commercial and still bitch about everything ie: the long hours[10 hour days..boo hoo.]all the while being treated like the pilled up little princess that she was.[rehab shortly thereafter].
pretty typical.
i deal w/ these types almost weekly.
.. many are spoiled little pouty babies and act thusly.
Many are very nice..humble,courteous,professional,etc too.
Laughable actually, but not so funny when you see the ridiculous amounts of money being thrown at them.
sorry to sound jaded, but many times i don't want to meet my heros.

Boo Hoo,poor Billy had to do a whole 10 minutes of press.
Actually, he's probably at the golf Course/Country club hangin w/ his hot young wife laughing his ass off all the way to the bank..

Hey, hey, give the guy a break. I mean, he DID say he was too old to rock n' roll and turned to composing classical music and having some young asian guy play it! I'm surprised he didn't show up to the Super Bowl with him on a collar chain and just rock the solo vocals.

Richard Joo is awesome, by the way.

P.S. Steve, there's a few threads floating around with the YouTube link.

Yes Julian and in this case he was FREE to make an ass of himself in front of a billion people. THAT IS FREEDOM!!!. fuuck

This is not the proper forum section to have a global political debate. Go to the Gear Free Zone and critisize the greatest free

THIS is the kind of thing that makes people think BJ fans are... what's the charitable word for it?

Mmm... never mind.

But one thing -- you think someone just made a decision to use Auto-tune on BJ without ASKING him? That IS amusing.

PS... I will agree on one thing... he appeared to take the problems like a trooper.
