Clip-on mic for trumpet

I am a trumpet player, and looking into purchasing a clip-on mic for live performances. One of my friend's has a Samson Airline 77 Wind Instrument mic, and he highly recommended it. So I've been checking it out, and evidently it's equipped with Samson's HM-40 microphone or optionally the ROAM 1 by Applied Microphone Technology. I'm kind of on a budget, and the optional upgrade to the AMT mic is a bit more. But would it be worth it? Any other information that anyone can tell me would be helpful.

Thanks!

Where do you play TRUMPET live and need your own mic?

That thing is loud. If you need more volume, you are in a big enough hall that they'll have a PA and mics.....

Trumpets are not as loud as you think. I played trumpet for years. I remember an experiment in high school where we took all the brass players and had them play a long loud note for 10 seconds. Thats 16 trumpets, 8 trombomes, 5 baritones, 6 french horns, 2 tubas, and a sousaphone. During this "note" one drummer took a snare drum and played. He could still be heard.

So tell me, if a snare is that loud, why mic a snare live? Go ahead and mike up the brass for outdoors if you want to really be heard.

AT 35, or the new one AT350, they sound great to me. I have three and use them on violins, drums, trumpets, trombone, saxes of all sizes and even tuba. Clean and natural and not expensive. There is also an AKG that costs abotu twice as much, sound pretty siilar and the wires come loose sometimes. Try AT!

Shure Beta98H/C. Available in a wireless version as well.

I use those and the older SM version all the time on horns.

AT does make a good clip on for this as well.

I play trumpet live with a rock band --- believe me, a mic is absolutely needed.

I haven't used any of the clip ons but I've been eyeing them as well - mostly a wireless solution is what I need - some I'm looking at:

I'm currently using a Shure SM58 on stage. I've been a little gun shy getting a clip on because, as you can imagine, standing amongst guitar amps and drums, I need to use a shield on my mic stand to play - putting the horn thru the monitors (at least to where I'd like to hear it) can be a little overwhelming to the singers.

Yikes.

Alright - if you have to have your own mic, make sure to get one that will handle the levels. Close mic'd, a trumpet will easily get up to 130dB.

I'm gonna say somthing like an RE16 or a Heil PR20 or another super/hyper cardioid to reduce that bleed that you are worried about.

For monitoring, get an IEM system - then you'll still be able to hear when you're 40.

The ATM350 is a solid mic for this application and can absolutely handle the SPL. The sax player for my band used the wireless version
(ATM35CW) for years. If you find yourself working the mic a lot, a clip on mic might not be for you.

I could've sworn I heard a horn player once say that he used a sennheiser e604 on his sax. Maybe something like that would work.

Very popular live horn mic.
