Question Mobile rig insurance

Hello,

How do you insure your mobile rigs? I know for my contracting business I have to carry commercial insurance and it covers all my tools if something was to happen, but if I am not making any huge amount o money mobile recording to justify carring commercial insurance. I have not called my agent yet, but if there are ways to cover everything that anyone knows of I could ask for it by name when I talk to the next available agent.

thanks!

A rider on your homeowner's insurance might be available to cover stuff "occasionally" used outside the house for business (against theft and/or damage). It's worth checking and shouldn't cost too much.

My homeowners covers the gear if it is in my house and it gets stolen, damaged, etc. It does not cover it if it breaks (on it's own) nor if I have it out of the house. I cannot buy insurance through my homeowners company for the equipment.

There are some companies out there that sell this stuff. I forget the names, but a search here might turn it up for you.

Clarion. They specialize in music and recording insurance, so I figure they'd be right up your alley.

I'm covered when I go on a gig, but I don't have a truck: you'll have to check with them.

Best of luck!

Maybe there is a rider you can add to your auto insurance.

How about Joe at the Recording Studio Insurance program (888.869.3535)

http://www.capitalbauer.com/recording.htm

I'm planning to switch to them soon myself. I understand they insure a lot of major studios including some high-end remote trucks. They say anywhere, anytime coverage. Anyone with first hand experience?

Best,
Silas

I checked with them last year after AES. He seems to be on the up and up and his quote was not outrageous. If I understood him correctly, he covers whatever replacement value you assign to your gear and bases his premium on that. He expected a $1000 deductible which is not so unreasonable. I don't recall if he offered General Liability.

He actually returned my call which is something I did not experience with several other insurance companies.

No experience as a customer yet, so I cannot speak to their customer service.

I seem to recall Clarion not having the exact services I was looking for. Aren't they more into musical instruments?

Best,
Rob

Sorry for the double post

I just spoke with my wife (who works for an insurance broker). She tells me that a policy like this is called an Equipment Floater.

She also gave me an application to fill out from the United States Liability Insurance Group (a Berkshire Hathaway Company).

If you like, I can share my quote when they give me one.

Best,
Rob

Rob, I think we all would be interested- Steve might consider insurance as a sticky if the thread has merit- lord knows anyone who has had loss without insurance has been bitten in the *ss before.

I'd like to see how to improve my gen liability costs....

Thanks for the offer, it's good of you!

Jim

As a bass player, I got all my music gear insured with Heritage. They specialize in musicians and the like. I have something $30,000 worth of coverage for less than $300 a year. There is a $500 deductible, but if you list items that are worth over that alone, and they get damaged or stolen, there is no deductible. So far I haven't had to make a claim......

Very nice folks and very responsive to all my questions and updates.

I highly recommend the Capital Bauer Group. The agent is Joe Monterello and these guys insure a ton of recording studios both standing and mobile.

What I like best about Joe Montarello and his Recording Studio Insurance program through Capital Bauer is the superior service he and his associates provide.

They are second to none!

I went with Clarion. I believe it's called an offshore marine policy.

Yeah, I really need to get my gear insured. I just left home for NYC for a week or so, and everytime I leave home I have a little panic attack while looking at my gear just before walking out the door. I'll happily pay for peace of mind...

Jim, you mentioned general liability - just curious why you need this. I don't have a commercial studio, it's mainly just for my (mostly theatre design) projects, not to mention not much more than an acoustically treated second bedroom. But I do a bit of consulting for performance venues, churches, and the like, and I know of a few consultants who carry some sort of insurance to protect against 'clients gone wild.' I've never had any problems, but I think about this more and more as my client list has been growing farther than a couple degrees of seperation from my immediate network of friends and colleagues...

Thanks!

Joe is it! This guy insures a lot of folks for a good reason. He knows his business and whats necessary and whats a waist of your time and money. He'll never make you sweat and just takes care of business.

Make the call now and you'll be glad you did.

Oh my, what happened.

This thread continued and I wasn't receiving the email updates.

Well, Yesterday I found some and it looks like it will cost me a little over $800 per year. I have to have the RV covered a little differently since I will be living in it and I am covered if someone stubbs their toe coming inside to listen to their mix.

Sounds reasonable?

Hello All

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

The policy had a heading of "Inland Marine" which apparently means coverage on the road in the U.S. (Perhaps the "Offshore Marine" Policy covers overseas?).

I asked for a quote on approximately $20,000 worth of gear with a $500 deductible. The quote came back around $800, which is not unreasonable. Of course, a $1000 deductible would probably bring it inline with the Capital Bauer quote of $650 that I got last year for a similar amount of equipment, but with a $1k deductible.

This does not include any General Liability coverage.

Best,
Rob

Take my word for it...go with Joe Monterello @ Capital Bauer. You'll always sleep well knowing your stuff is safe and you made a great choice. We have millions of dollars worth of equipment insured through them.
They are hands down the best in the business and always there to help with anything. I still speak with Joe personally.
Rock on!

I left him a voicemail last week. It sure would be nice if he returned phone calls.

I pay $3 per hundred with a $250 deductible from my carrier. Runs me about $1500 for $55,000, plus or minus. A higher deductible would lower that rate. I have $1 million in personal liability for for $500 a year as long as I don't fly any speakers for my live sound end of the business.

My regular carrier wouldn't give me reasonable coverage for off-premises. I did a little research and a friend reccomended Heritage Musician's Insurance.

For contents, I've got $120,000 on-premise and $45,000 off-premise for under $1k per year.
