DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT.

I know michael has been struggling for some time now, but i had heard he was hanging tough.

this is such a huge loss. As a player, second only to Coltrane in my book, and even as heavy really.

I know only from friends that worked with him that he was the sweetest of guys----

God bless him.... and much love to his family and friends.

I studied under David Tronzo who came out of the New York Avante Garde at the same time as Brecker. It's only fitting that I share this story.

Mike blew so hard that he'd get air in his neck and it'd swell up really bad. Dave was dealing with serious tendonitis because he developed his own technique for slide guitar and his first attempt screwed him up pretty bad.

So they're at a bar, Mike's neck all swollen and Dave's hands keep closing up. Two peas in a pod. They sort of became a support network for each other.

The Doctors limited them to half an hour of practice a day. Both of these guys are practicing 8 hours plus before the injury. I don't know if any of you are on this level of play but if you are, you know what kind of shock this is. (may even not so...anyway) So Mike calls Dave on the phone one day. Here's the Phone conversation:

Mike: Hey, what are you doing?
Dave: Nothing, I'm just sitting here with my ax in my lap waiting til I can practice again.
Mike: Yeah me too.
Dave: I've been here for an hour just waiting, it's driving me nuts.
Mike: I've been here for 3 hours...

I just thought I'd share my Mike Brecker story. I'm from New York and when one of our own goes, it's hard.

It was a shock to read of Michael Brecker's passing...but Alice as well...

Sad news. More links with the past gone.

Thanks for the music.
