I totally understand, my RV has been a labor of love. This first year and a half has been all about shakin out the wrinkles. I've been doing remote recording for years on a much smaller scale, with the RV I can do a lot more and the quality has come up because I can hear so much better and I can bring even more gear :-)

The control room can be loaded with a variety of gadgets depending on what's needed. My favorite setup is Grace Design m801 preamps, API 3124+ preamps, a pair of HD24XR 24 track recorders used as a redundant pair (for backup), and a Yamaha mixer which feeds a pair of CD recorders, I always try to produce a good reference CD as well as the multi-track recordings.

Best of luck to you with your recording.

Steve, you have convinced me. I was just about to start punching holes in my new splitter stage box chassis when I read your thoughts about the Elco connectors.

I did a deep search of GS and read a lot of stuff about snakes and connectors and have decided to make a course change.

My new transformer isolated splitter is only a 16 channel unit so I've decided to just make it all XLR connectors for now and use fan to fan snakes for my connections. I'm including spots on the chassis where I can add multi-pin panel mount sockets later on if I want to.

I'll just put the Elco parts back into inventory and continue saving them for something cool. Except for the Adat snakes (which were dirt cheap) these parts have been in inventory since 1990 so a little longer won't hurt.

Also, I now totally get where you were coming from about making penetrations in the entry door instead of the building...doh. The carriage bolt means they don't even have a head on the outside to turn and try to break in. Cool. I'll get my iron work bro's on making me some plates after I finish my new RV control room and splitter.

Thanks for being willing to share. If you ever make it out here to StL I hope you'll look me up, the dinner and entertainment is on me.

I like the all XLR split box with future multipin potential.
It's a lot of connections so make sure your soldering is perfect for all the obvious reasons.

I've been to St. Louie a few times...

I'll keep you posted if I make it out there again.

Good thought but most times equipment regulates one from doing so

The one serious problem I have regarding fiber or Cat5 or Cat6 cable is the fact that if the "hose" gets cut you loose everything. If an analog trunk gets cut you only loose the upper channels unless it completely gets severed which is a pretty difficult thing to do under normal conditions.

Elroy shall have the ability to run all types of runs to/from the mobile unit offering serious backup capabilities. For me, until we figure out all the potential issues and address them from top to bottom the jury is still out.

Hello Mark and Steve! Fancy seeing you two again!

Mark, Very interesting reading your thread on this app. You're a few steps ahead. Nice RV. What's your MPG? I actually looked at one similar to yours. 12.5' tall 8' wide 35' long. It was an old mobile medical exam vehicle. A little creppy though.. The back portion was a small room with only a single chair bolted in the middle of the room. There were scuff marks on the low portion of the wall like someone was being held in the chair and those holding them down used the wall as a brace to force people in the chair .

Anyway, back OnT

It's a one bedroom apartment on wheels. It's freezing ice cold here right now, but very soon I'll be finishing the new Control Room insert which converts the rear bedroom into a control room in about an hour. All my electronics are modular so the RV can be outfitted a lot of different ways.

The old MPG question. That's the first question people always ask when they see the RV. I tell people (on the phone) the machine is big but they are always shocked at how big it is when I pull up. 8.3 mpg. It's the ultimate gas guzzler, I figured I'm not getting any younger and one of these days our government is going to wake up and realize they can tax the crap out of us for fuel and there's nothing we can do about it. We are so spoiled in the US. Gas in England is the equiv of $10/gallon. $8/gallon in Portugal. At the Shell station by my house gas is currently $1.88/gallon. Drive on!

What really pisses me off tho is not the fuel cost, it's the gas pumps. What dip stick decided that gas pumps should cut off at 75 or 100 dollars worth? I've got a 75 gallon tank.

One of the factors I considered heavily when purchasing this vehicle was resale value. I anticipate recovering about 60% of my purchase price when I sell it. The majority of depreciation has already occured on a 10 year old RV. They are terrible investments when they're new, as bad or worse than cars. A new RV loses 33% by driving it off the dealers lot. Mine was down about 75% from its new price when I bought it. Like I said before, I looked at over 1000 machines in my quest to find this one, it took six months.

I've had a lot of fun recording with it so far and it's not even finished yet (electronically speaking). This will be its second summer and I anticipate it will be solidly in the black with just the few jobs I've already booked.

I started the RV project about a year and a half ago because I love electronics, music and recording. Then I found the Gearslutz forum and that has given me a lot of great iinformation.

Best of luck to you with your recordings.
