got a room 12 by 13 + carpet (high ceiling) got nice piano - rodgers upright assuming there won't be a stellar acoustic, wondering if omins would be wasted. Figure of 8s also? Cardioids then ? 2 mics for $2k ish thank you |

I would try TLM 193's in ORTF or 414's in ORTF. Bluemline 414's might not be a bad choice either. I have never found an upright that sounds good to my ears... but knowing how directional they are, I wouldn't be opposed to maybe try close miking the thing and adding reverb later. I would use either the 414's or maybe 4041's for close miking. Just my 2 cents.. D- |

thanks for that. I was thinking about 414s so I could play around with the polar patterns but I had a couple in a studio a while back and never liked them. More likely my fault than AKGs. I also got it in my head I needed SDCs. Who knows why. I know the real answer is to try a load of them but I was interested in peoples real life experience of small rooms and pianos. I never noticed those little DPAs before. anyone have much luck with close miking pianos and adding reverb later? onwards and upwards |
