How do you convert 4 bit files to 16 bit?

This is similar to a thread someone else started but going in the opposite direction. I have some samples that are 4 bit and I can't get anything to read them (Battery, Kontakt, etc.) except of course Windows Media Player.

Can I convert these to 16 bit so I can use them in Kontakt or Battery or am I just stuck?

I'm pissed that my 1 bit samples won't play back on anything except my colecovision.

You have to multiply them by 4.

Wave audio Editor

Try using a wave audio editor like Cool Edit or Sound Forge. You should be able to resave the file in an upsampled 16 bit format. It will not make the file sound better, mind you, but it won't make it any worse either.

For Macintosh, Sound Hack will do bit up and down transforms, as well as sample-rate, share/free-ware.

What about a very sharp knife? Should do the trick.

a quick work-around would be to play them in WM and just sample it into something else
