$2,000 for a new mic

I'm looking for the best mic for rappers and R&B singers for around $2000 (up to $2500.) Right now I have a TLM-103, which I really like (despite what everyone says around here).

So come on guys... tell me which mic will destroy the TLM103!

I want to narrow it down to 3 choices and then I will audition them and choose accordingly. I think it would be cool to get a tube mic.

I will be running this through a 737. I never mic instruments and just need an awesome vocal mic. Btw, I already own a SM7.

I have used a U87 for years on rap and r&b. I have sometimes used a Microtech Gefell um92s some years ago and thought it was nice as well, although I forgot how much it was. You may want to also check out the Audio Technica AT4060, which is a tube mike and may be good for your price range. Although I would like to try it, the Neumann tlm 49 seems to be a nice buy.. anyone try it yet?

Last year a friend loaned me his U87 (one of the newer models) and honestly I preferred the TLM103! I know it sounds crazy, but I tested it on 2 rappers and a female singer and we all liked the 103 better.

I just found a post suggesting the Pearlman TM1, so I'm definitely adding that to my list.

Anyone here recommend any of the Charter Oaks or Peluso line?

Peluso 2247 LE murders the TLM103 for sure. So does the Soundelux Ifet 7 and the Charter Oak SA538. The SA538B was a little bright for my taste

Well you have your answer then. It doesn't sound crazy to me.....

Agreed.

Nu Mixer, do you have a sample of the vocalist you would be using this on? I could probably help you narrow down your search. I have had good luck with the Peluso 47 LE, and 251 on rappers and R&B singers. The P12 is also a really nice mic, that could be considered the most versatile.

What kind of sound are you looking for? Modern & airy? Big & dark?

Also, where you will be tracking the vocals? Small vocal booth, large live room, bedroom, basement, etc?

Here's some more details: I record vocals in a small booth. Looking for something that's modern and airy-- like the C800G. I would also like something that is versatile and would compliment my 103. Most all of my tracking sessions are female pop and R&B singers (no screamers, no jazz) and rappers.

I will attach a short sample. The chain is 103-->737-->Rosetta200-->PT. I could use an honest assessment of how the vocals are sounding (sonically) and what I could expect in terms of improvement.

[disclaimer: this is an unfinished demo and these are just scratch vocals, that's why the doubles aren't tight, etc.]

Also, based on this sample, do you think a Distressor could offer substantial improvement?

Thanks, guys!

I'm not in the studio right now, so I can't really give you any feedback on the quality of the vocal tonight.

Well, the 22 47 LE is a great mic for hip hop vocals... but knowing the sound you're after, I would recommend you check out the Peluso 251 before you do ANYTHING else..

It's a great mic. It is a bright microphone, yet it never seems to get harsh. It has that modern, airy C800G-ish top end.... and it's the only thing right now that gives that sound in this price range. Plus, you can stack R&B (& pop) vocals for days, and never get any weird midrange build-up(which can be an issue with some mics in small booths). For rappers, it's especially effective on rappers you tend to double track. You'll find yourself using less EQ, and getting a great sound with just a little bit of compression.

I can send you some samples I've recorded with the 251 in a small booth (with no EQ and just a little bit of compression), if you'd like to hear them.

Sorry about that... PM's are tough for me to keep track of sometimes.

Email me at: tony@highprofileaudio.com and I can hit you back with some samples. I think you would probably like the Pearlman TM-1, or 22 47LE if you are looking for more of a full bodied, "bigger" sound.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm hoping a new mic will take me to the next level!

Or should I get a Distressor?

It's more than a good idea to check out the Lawson mic's... in this price range I don't feel there's a better value out there. The ability to swap out capsules (L47 or L251) and or electronics (tube or FET) alone is pretty killer!

I've had my L47MPmkII for a few years now and love this mic more and more each time I set the thing up! I love the lush yet articulate way this mic captures a source ... seems like it really reaches out into the sound field in a very three dimensional sorta' way. The 103 (?)... can't hold toilet paper for the Lawson. I "dumped" mine a while ago!

I keep meaning to grab the L251FET... hmm Xmass present for self(?)... where's that "Lose girlfriend over gear" thread?
