Time Stretch Tests

I took a clip and stretched it -5 BPM using three different programs: Wavelab 5, Timefactory 2, and Sonar 6 (MPEX and Radius). Each WAV clip was "looped" for 4 bars at 24 bit, 48K then converted to a 192 VBR MP3. While I hear slight differences (Timefactory sounds thinner, while Wavelab more bassy), the differences weren't that great.

Original
original.mp3

Sonar MPEX
mpex.mp3

Sonar Radius
radius.mp3

Wavelab 5
wavelab5.mp3

Timefactory 2
timefactory2.mp3

I'll redo this test if someone provides a loop and the BPM change.

Any chance you could use a hardware time stretch like the Akai EB16 to compare against the software? Timebandit for mac os9 was the s**t. I still use it. I like the MPEX the best but its hard to really see what the algorythm is doin to the sound without a more dramatic shift in tempo.

I don't have any hardware, but I'd be glad to do another test if you provide a loop and how much you'd like it to change.

Send a message via AIM to Sirocco
i think a more drastic stretch could tell the true nature of a algorithm much better

Ain't nothing beating the DIRAC stretch in Wavelab 6. Hands down the best I ever heard.

How about analog time stretch!
I just picked this up, but have yet to test it. A Springer Eltro Tempophon!

from: http://granularsynthesis.music.net.a...is/gabor2.html

"The German company Springer made a device called the Tempophon. The device was similar to that designed by Gabor (Figure 3.5). This time/pitch changing device was installed in a number of analogue electronic music studios around Germany (Roads 1996a: 441). It was the first time granular methods were used in a commercial environment. In 1963 Herbert Eimert used the Tempophon for an electronic music composition called Epitaph für Aikichi Kuboyama"

Yeah, it's definately more timely than just doing it with the quick settings, but it sounds pretty good.

Wow, I haven't seen one of those in 40 years! It's kind of a pain to use...
