I would say, in all seriousness, the very first route you should go is to every source of information you can find on home recording. Whether it be cracking open a beer or 12 and reading everything you can on this site, or going to the library, or book store, or asking someone who is doing what you want to do. Far deeper than the "Should I use ProTools or Cubase or Logic or DP or Audition..." answers is the knowledge to use them to their full potential.
I'm not being trite or anything, I'm just saying, if you're new to this, GO CHEAP until you learn to use what you have.
