too many plug-ins usually (99.9% of the time) do more harm than good.

Have your artists record some S's, and F's, and some very sibilant words (ahem...."excessive sex is so necessary" )...analyze the frequency of their sibilant words, then use your fave EQ plug to shape the vocal and de-ess it like that.

One less plug-in in the mix is almost always a plus.

yes but

Agreed less is more regarding plugins, but eq-ing and de-essing aren't the same thing. De-essing is dynamic (ie only kicks in when a particular frequency reaches the threshold, like a compressor) - EQing out that frequency might adversely affect the rest of the vocal tone.

Better advice would be to

a) look at the capture - de-essing should ideally be a fix not standard practice. If you're regularly needing to de-ess look at your recording chain - 87s and Avalons can be over harsh on certain voices.

b) level ride the vocal, ducking it down for offending Sssess.

Hope that helps.

Get rid of the Avalon and get a UA 610 and a 1176 or LA2A. I never cared for the Avalon sound. Too clinical. No character. Everyone uses it.

The U87 into the 610 is amazing. If your gonna use compression plugins the Bomb Factory LA2A is very good.
