What is this drum overhead setup?

I was recently watching a video of Pharrell in the studio playing drums and wondered how the drum overheads work so close together.

I've included a screen shot.

Will they have the mics in omni?

Thanks

Depends on the mic pattern. NOS if they are cardioid, XY if they're on figure 8.

I thought XY had to be at an angle of so many degrees apart.

I set up XY a few times on drums but dont understand how the same thing can be achieved with two mics both pointing forward.

XY would use cardoid or hypercardoid. That appears to be a standard coincident pair

It's really hard to tell from the pics, but my first thought was coincident pair. It looks to me like they are too far apart for that though. If the mics angled away from each other and set to figure 8, then it's xy. Again, that pic is blurry as hell so it's hard to tell.

If they are using figure 8 that would be closer to a blumlein pair I believe. xy is just cardoids. But its hard to tell anything from that pic. Just too fuzzy

I'm pretty sure that you can do xy with figure 8's. Blumlein is similar, but not quite the same. I might have to break out that huge ass book - The New Recording Studio Handbook - to find out for sure.

BTW - your music is tight.

Thats a clip from the a video on the net but I have the Dvds and the mics are too far apart for coincident pair. They are also a little angled away from each other.

I've used small diaphragm condensors like BnKs in XY but they're cardiod.

Just wondering what the difference would be.
