Budget monitors for rap

I'm going to be buying some monitors next month and I really have no idea where to turn. I need at least a 6.5" woofer, I'm looking to spend up to $700 and my room is untreated currently but I'll eventually be doing some sort of treatment. What would u suggest for our kind of music?

Thanks

SOS Review

You can do a search on slutz for krk v6 and find plenty of info there as well...

Personally, I have had them for a while but it wasn't until the other day when I positioned them in a tight 41" triangle have i heard their true glory... sick 3d depth and an accurate stereo imaging... i feel like i bought brand new speakers!

OH, and they have yellow cones

I know they're a little more, but I really dig my Dynaudio BM5a's....New they're about $1000, but you can find 'em used for cheaper.

Miles apart as in just plain different, or miles apart as in WORSE?

Plug,plug...

Im kidding, seriously I have old Tannoy PBM8s with a carver PM-300. It has served me well through the trenches but the 65hrtz roll off is starting to hurt my mixes when they go to the club. Im saving up for the Blue Sky set up...
As far as difusers and soundproofing? a dude I knew in philly produced a hit single beat in a room with carpet on the walls, but they had great headphones. I think a good set of headphones is as impotant as a good set of speakers. I trust Grado's, high end senhiesers, and my friend is trying to get me to buy a pair of Ultrasone 750's...

I use the HD280s in day to day stuff and it translates reasonably well. I had a pair of AKG's for the vocal booth, theyre great for tracking and such but Ive found that for mixing, you really need something more accurate, especially below 100hrtz. I had a pair of Grado RS2s...they were really the shit! unfortunately they were 'missplaced' somewhere. Im really hype on the ultasones and I havent even heard them yet...I producer friend, whose ears I trust, has been raving about them for weeks!
heres some tech info on the 750s...

Technical specifications:
S-Logic™ Natural Surround Sound
Dynamic principle
Frequency range 8-35.000 Hz
Impedance 40 Ohm
Sound pressure level 94 dB
MU Metal bufferboard, reduced field emissions
in accordance with ULE standard
Driver 40 mm titanium-plated
Weight 295 g (without cord)

Yes, 8 hrtz....

I have a pair of the 750's. They cost $400 worth every penny. Very accurate. I mean you should never mix on headphones but i use mine for tracking.

For that budget I'd have to agree that the Blue Skys and maybe the KRKs stand out on their own.

My personal rec would be the Blue Skys.

I know of a number of studios using them in the UK and they are very good at that price point.
Certainly less coloured than the KRKs.

Yeah I know... just something about small ass speakers makes me go tutt

How hard will it be to calibrate the sub for an untreated room??

One thing I do know, if I end up going with the Blue Sky I'll go through you if the shipping is free!

I got these myself, my room is semi treated, the most thing you need to think about with these is bass trapping. Blue Sky have docs on the site which give you pointers on that with positioning of the sub and claibration files also.

As far as the size of the satelites don't be fooled by that (Tony you can tell him). As long as you have an average size room your cool...In a bigger room though you may really need more SPL. The crossover frequency on the Blue Sky is set higher than most 110 hz so the sats aren't trying to produce any bass freq's that's all done on the sub, which goes down to 35hz.

For me it just means I can get my low end sitting proper and get the relationsship between the kick and the bass better.

Also they sound great, good depth, very consistant over different material, and are easy on the ear so you can mix without getting fatiged.

Why not just NS-10's?

Why not NS-10's? If you're on a budget, the bass in your room isn't going to be accurate anyways, so why have something that's going to just shake your room around. When I was doing hip-hop stuff on an NHT A-10/B-20 system, I always turned off the subs. It just wasn't accurate enough for me. I'd check it with the subs at the end, but i'd rather have a clear mix, than just try to get the room vibrating.

NS-10's can do anything, and MANY MANY hip-hop albums that you own were probably done on them.
