TONY, I need your opinion

I am thinking about purchasing a distressor or fatso. I have two concerns, 1st. I would like to aggressive compressor for vocals and guitars/bass (for hiphop). 2nd., I desire to have the vintage warmth of the fatso (or that kind of device).

I saw a demo of these devices at the namm show and I was impressed. The probelm is I can't afford both of them. So Iam bring this issue to you as a method of determing if this is a good idea.

If this is a bad idea please provide an alturnative.

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

My name is Tony, so I feel obligated to answer this question.

Get the distressor.

i don't own a distressor so i can't comment on that...but i do own a FATSO and i'll say it's probably one of the best gear pickups i've ever made.

i haven't used it yet for tracking vocals or bass, but i'm using it as a mix bus compressor with sick results.

i used to get mixes with really loud, ear piercing annoying highs in my snares. the fatso hella smooths that out. added onto that, it tightens up the low-end in the mix and it's something you'll notice on systems like the one in your car or boomboxes.

it's pretty versatile. i doubt i've even scratched the surface of what it can do. i just leave it on bus compressor mode all the time.

I wouldn't use the FATSO on vocals.

I really like the FATSO on room mics (and of course people use it on the stereo buss, vocals, etc).

I like the Distressor on almost everything other than stereo buss & drum buss.

So, I guess you should get the Distressor.
