I own the Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO and the AKG K 271 Studio, and very satisfied with both for controling the mix.
The 770 is more "hi-fi-ish" it has a dip in the bass and in the highs.
The AKG is more linear, and for me the first choice for control the bass in the mix (after checking on my main ones of course).

they are both around 150-170$

but i think there are so many headphones out there for this kind of use, you´d better compare it in a music store

hope this helps a little

I love the DT 770 Pro's...I have two pairs...really nice sound, but I notice on tracks with real deep, heavy bass the tend to distort a little bit....overall though...the best headphons I've ever had. Like ol' boy said....I would take some of your material to a music store and test them out. Peace.

Grado makes some of the best reference phones...from kinda inexpensive to ultra high end. I use Sennheisers for tracking tho

I have two dt770 and one senn. hd580.

The hd580 is better for mixing.

dt770 is better for tracking.

OMG! These are like works of art. Can you buy these? Oh, AKG240. Sort of like the NS10 of the headphone world.

I have about 6 different cans, all for different tasks. But if I had to choose one then it would be the Senn HD 650.
