Chandler Germanium pre with a SM7b..good combo??

i have no experience with chandler gear, but obviously theyve got a good rep around here. Im looking to improve my vocal chain. Would the Chandler Germanium pre pair up good with a Shure SM7b for hiphop vocals?? Has anyone successfully used this combo for vocals??

please share

and Tony, how much would you sell me one for?!

Maybe ask this question in the main forum. I also would like to hear what people think.

I think it could work well... The Germanium has a very distinct color to it when you drive it. I think the Germanium is particularly suited for guitars, though. The SM7b requires a lot of gain, and I'm sure the Germanium can supply it.

Is it possible to describe that color?! (i know i know, its like asking someone to describe green)

But I dont have much coin to toss around, and there arent too many places around here (Long Island) where I can demo one.

Im not really looking for a pristine, sparkly clear vocal, since I do underground hiphop on the darker side of things. but at the same time I dont want the vocal to be too grimey, they have to cut through the grimey beats.

The only other option I can really see, in the $1000-1200 range is a lunchbox with one 500 series module, but then its going to hurt me to see 5 empty slots. Its like a really really big dude with a really really small penis.

I asked this question a while back--not in reference to hip hop vocals specifically, though--and a couple of people said it was not a good combo. I haven't used either unit myself, but the people who posted appear to know their stuff. Here's a link to an good SM7 thread and some feedback on the Germ(see post#86):

On the other hand the API and SM7 combo gets a lot of praise, so maybe the lunchbox would be good. Haven't yet tried it myself, though...

I probably would opt for a 500 series preamp (512c, A Designs P1)... They will give you a nice color. Probably the A Designs P1 because it's a little brighter and will help contrast with the darker sound of the SM7. But, the API & SM7 is a great combo. I think either of those would be a great choice.

how about the Aurora GTQ2 MK3? I'm thinking about getting one of these from Tony...so far I have the SM7B to DBX160x and I'm thinking to Aurora to Fireface and later on in hte year ($) to a Rosetta 200

how is the 160x on vocals? I would just use it a bit so I can crank the pre up and then use another comp in my puter afterwards....

if it's no good on vocals, I'll just use it on my 60/S950 snizares and maybe kicks

whatcha think?
