Louisiana HipHop Scene?

Yo

I'm from the UK and will be heading out to Louisiana (Baton Rouge, but also in NO too) for a year, in november. I don't know too much about hiphop in LA though, you guys got any people you'd recommend working with, approaching, etc?

Basically, do you guys know of any decent rappers/hiphop from Louisiana?

Underground or otherwise?

Thanks

webbie and lil' boosie are from Baton Rouge and are huge. They did "girl, gimmie that pussy". I got an advance of Lil' Boosie - Badass, and its good. got that "ratchet" track on it. Their label Trill Ent. (owned by UGK?) is based in Baton Rouge.

Is Sanford Hinderly still running the recording classes there?
I did my undergrad there. How's the studio these days. (I can remember when it was adats/mackie board, and I had the same set up at home. LOL)

The communications dept. had protools LONG before the studio did. I was also in the first class to take Dr. Rankin's Music Business course as well. (I should have taken his guitar class.)

IT's a cool school, but for the money I should have gone to UNO.

Man we should shoot some pool and talk shop a bit. I'd like to know what changes they have made over there.

Plus, the school is a GREAT resource for finding string players and other musicians.

Mr. Hinderly is still involved but its Jay Crutti who runs the recording classes and much of the IT department. Jay's a 20 something Loyno graduate and an awesome teacher. This coming semester starting a week from tomorrow I'll be a Teacher's assistant for him- helping students in the recording classes in Labs, repairs and studio oddjobs, and of course doing my own projects (i get keys to the studio ).

The mackie board and adats you speak of are actually on their way out- i think ill be helping remove both...
nowadays its Pro Tools HD (with apogee converters), a control 24, some really nice preamps, and a huge ass monitor that take up most of the studio. <- i think there will be some changes to the PT setup as well.

Maybe for you, but luckily i got a scholarship to go to LoyNO and I'm in the Music Industry program. 122 credit program, one of the best in the country i think

The talent here is unbelievable especially when it comes to Jazz heads... sadly tho a lot of the hiphop heads have big egos and not a lot of talent to back it up ...
but ive managed to meet a few good ones and am hoping to meet some more and release a series of mixtapes featuring college talent from the city/state(including xavier, uno, dilliard, lsu, etc. etc.)
I'll be in the city on wednesday moving into my new apartment, buying furniture, etc. etc.
Im definately down for meeting up sometime.

I was a business (marketing) major, BUT I feel u. Actually for Undergrad, Loyola was the best place for me. At UNO you are more a number than a person (there are so many students in some classes).

I went to UNO for grad school because it's a smaller program with less students, and by the time I got to Grad school, I no longer needed the extras that Loyola provided.

UNO has some pretty good talent in the music program as well.

Do you have a link to some music? What's your primary instrument? EXpect rent to be higher than before here.

I kinda figured Loyola would have moved up to HD systems by now. LOL It's only fitting. When they had adats, I had adats at home. Now that I'm on HD, I knew for sure the school was..

FWIW,
I can personally reccomend David "D. Funk" Faulk. He produced and engineered a lot of the No Limit stuff more so with Mystikal as far as I know. But I've worked with him a few times before I got into home recording suprisingly with his discography his studio rates are pretty cheap. Not a multi-million dollar setup either, it's pretty basic but he's an experienced engineer.

Unhappy Updating Louisiana Hip-Hop

I know this may be very late, but I couldn't help but answer.

As a native Louisianan, there is a lot of small, but talented hip-hop brewing beyond the mainstream of No Limit, Cash Money, Trill Entertainment, and the Rachet Movement in Shreveport. As a musician, producer, singer, etc, I know this stuff first hand.

First off, I know the title doesnt sound too intresting, but what I think the person was trying to say with "Gimmie That" (official title) was that Trill Entertainment with Lil Boosie, and Webbie (web-bie, not wee-bie) been doing their thing for about 5 years, and they finally got their deal. Same with Souja Boy and Hurricane Chris.

Now, for the main question, I hope in the time you were here, you were able to find what you were looking for in Baton Rouge or New Orleans, but I would suggest comming down another hour down I-10 to Lafayette. Thats where Im at, and here is were the last significant indepentdent music scene is for whatever genre before Austin, Tx. Im here, and you can check me out more @ MySpace.com - Be... UNORTHODOX - NEW IBERIA, LAFAYETTE, NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - Hip Hop / Reggae / Funk - www.myspace.com/urbangroovz

I would be happy to help anybody about music in this area, especially Hip-Hop, if they are willing to do the same.

Holla Back

Ooh...that could be tough. There's not much of a scene down south these days...especially in New Orleans.

Its not "tough" as you put it

I beg to differ about new orleans.

There is a small yet dedicated community of MCs and producers in the New Orleans metro area. Most are talented lyrically and highly motivated.
To name a few that I work with personally:

3-d Natee - vicious female battle rapper, mixtape/myspace hustler
General Public (7 man rap crew) - Just finished recording a mixtape with them. Kinda Diplomats vibe as far as the structure- 3 main MCs who perform and record solo as well as a group
Show - signed with Chubby Boy/Def Jam, ghostwriting for Mannie Fresh currently
K. Gates - self proclaimed New Orleans Savior, was on Dame Dash's Ultimate Hustler show a couple years ago, currently working in a group called the 80's babies with original hot boy B.G.
Dee-1 - lyrical, positive minded MC, featured on Yahoo's Pepsi Smash (only one that was decent lyrically)
YouTube - Freedom Land
J.r. - 14 year old beast, still finding his own style but has a energetic flow with good vocabularyJohn Doe and N.o. most wanted -
Cypher - fly guy, single out called "Mr. Average"
Young Money- Mack Maine, Raw D.I./dizzy, Currency
Blaire Levigne- R&B singer/producer
Da Goonz, 5star

And about the lack of a scene in the south - Rachet scene (hurricane chris) in Shreveport, LA ::Trill ENT (Wipe me Down?)in Baton Rouge, LA and on top of that New Orleans go to show that Louisiana is a force to be reckon with in this new era.

I know, I know. I was being sarcastic...I couldn't resist. It's no secret that the south's exploded these past few years.

Anyway, NO is a beautiful city; my godfather lives out there. I hope the original poster is enjoying his time there.

Southern talent? Oxymoron?

You're stretched finding talent in that whole region MC-wise, let alone one state. Scarface, Outkast (ironically, probably the most original artists in the genre), & a group of others always come consistent.... Chamillionaire's about the only younger MC that I can stand - Lil Wayne has talent, but needs to get away from his lover Baby, Luda's usually pretty nice.... off the top of the head though, that's it. I'm sure there's underground artists that sound cold, but southern mainstream has had as big of an influence in this talentless "snap" shit as anywhere. Now, with lyrical prodigies like the Ying Yang Twins getting signed, everyone thinks they can rap.... & honestly, the industry can't tell them otherwise after looking at most "artists". Just throw in a car model, form of Gucci, iced out ________, pop a bottle of Cristal/Patron, & you're on your way to success.

NO rocks though!

and a visit to (lower) 9th ward gave me fuel for a lot of creativity :-(

Yea, everywhere has talented underground artists - the east coast is still full of talent, the midwest is starting to become that way... even in the mainstream.

N.O. is a tight city though, haven't been back since Katrina, but I'm sure it'll be back to what it was eventually.
