| akg 414 XL II with vintech x73i ??? Hello I know a lot of posts have been made on these two individual pieces of gear but I am curious about what people think about how they work together. I currently use these to record rap vocals and reggae. I do not have experience with many different microphones and I have been reading a lot of posts where people said that the akg is not the best for rap type vocals. I had originally hoped that the akg's flat response would complement the colour that is added by the vintech...but now I am wondering if I made an error. Do you guys think that my set up is fine or is there another mic (in the same price range as the akg 414 -> around $1100) that would be better suited with my pre? Thanks in advance. |

| Lives for gear | I'm using a 414 XL II with a Isa220. sounds great . i'vedone a few commerical songs with this combo over the last month and it sounds great. i like the vintech but i'd get a distressor to go along with it.... i say get an A-designs pacifica with the 414 XL II and you'll be set.. get yourself at least a dbx 160xt or pro vla compressor too... its a little extra money but worth it... i see dbx 160's every week for 150-260 |

| i've used a 414 with a vintech 473 and i thought it was ok. i'm now using a blue mouse with the 473 and it's waaaaay bigger and better. i'm going to try that mic tony talks about, i think it's the psuendo 251. thats probably the wrong spelling, but a friend bought one -- per tony's advice. |

Thanks everyone for the replys I will definitly check out the gear you guys suggested...I DO really want a distressor as I am using a RNC right now...maybe I should worry about that first....

| cool...I'll definitely check the Peluso 251 out. One last question...do you think it would be more important for me to get a better compressor (ie the Distressor) to replace my RNC or should I worry about the mic first? I usually do the majority of my compression ITB using the Waves Ren Vox or Ren Compressor. |

| Lives for gear | i haven't heard to many vocals tracked through a 22 251 that i didn't like... sometimes the 2247LE can sound to big or to upfront but the 22 251 sits in the mix very well when i get some extra money i'm gonna buy all the peluso mics... |

I think the RNC is great for your situation, I would put my money into a new Mic or Pre first.
