Well it depends on who's mixing.

You can do a lot after(you'd be suprised)...but that's really up to your skill level as a mixer.

The SSL does impart its own sound..but that's a discussion for another day.

But if you get it right going in its always best.

Thx a lot for the help Thrill.

Just one more question i promise

You recommended the Tube Tech MP1A over the UA 2-610.

I was wondering if the Tube Tech has nice tube phatness to it? I know you said its buttery, which great, but is it big and phat aswell?

Also, your positive that as long as it was kept in great condition, it doesnt matter if the unit is 9 years old? Just asking because of the tubes. Thanks!

If you want toobey smear get the UA, if you want a fairly clean tube get the TT, if you want a sweet euphonic tube get the Fearn, if you want a tight and fast tube pre get the Manley.

Tele V76 comes to mind for you.

Or the Vipre if one channel will do ... that does a lot of tube sounds.

Yes the Tubetech does.

Its not as dark as the UA but its not the tube in gear that gives the phatness but the transformers.

If you are really concerned change the tubes.

Again i suggested Mullards because i like its euphoinic tones.

Telefunkens are a tad clearer more open.

Summit FEQ50

i have been really impressed with the Summit FEQ50 (half rack series) very clean, no weird artifacts. smooth and very workable.

Thrill, can you still buy the original tubes for the MP1A?

When you hear "NOS" and "Mullard" and "Telefunken" these are meant to denote what are generally better tubes than used new.

NOS = new old stock.

50's, 60's tubes that are tested new by a reputable dealer are far better than the Sovteks or Chinese Dragons that Tube Tech puts in these new. Better as in more depth and tone. Mullard - smooth. Tele - clean.

I use tubeworld.com and have used upscaleaudio.com but there are many options.

Hey Thrill,

I just wanted to ask one last time if you still recommend the Massive Passive as my all around tracking EQ? I keep reading how great it is on vocals, ect, but i wont be doing any vocals at all. Only MPC drums, synths, bass, keyboard sounds, and live guitar. I just wanted to ask one last time.

I want to be able to pass the signal thru transformers without going thru eq section. I want to do this to add colour and saturation. I want an EQ where its going to put a big smile on my face when i turn the knob, or even pass drums, synths, ect, through the transformers. Does the Massive Passive make a big difference in colour and saturation when putting sounds just through the transformers?

I was reading another thrad on here when i was searching and i came across a hip-hop engineer saying the following:

" Pultec EQP-1A - Has chunky iron transformers on it too, saturates nicely and will make anything sound bigger, even in bypass! These things have low end for days, and the top end will make even the dullest sounding drums punch through any mix. Running an already great sounding drum through one of these will make you wonder why you thought it sounded great before you did."

I like the sound of that. WIll the Massive do that?

MP is not a Pultec. It's got no transformer balls. Best for mids.

You really might want to wait for the germanium eq ... go to new products and read about it.

Feedback and pultec-ish low filters... sounds very sweet.

Hey Lucey, so have you actually had a chance to hear this Chandler EQ? Like a beta model or something? Does it have transformer balls so just running sounds through the transformers will make it sound phat like the Pultec?

Fron what ive read they should be out in September. Thanks.

I have not heard it ... like I said ... read in New Products. Joe Barresi and other Gearslutz are weighing in.

Thanks a ton Lucey, i read the newest threads about it i think im sold! I'll grab 2 of them. If passing through the signal without even equing makes things sound better im 110% sold. Hopefully when they come out they'll have some into deals. Thanks again lucey!

yes, i have two channels of Millennia with KILLER EQ's, vintage Filtek MK5b's, focusrite RED dual EQ, Manley Massive Passive Mastering version. I think i have enough to do a good comparison. the summits will NOT sound like a millennia or massive passive, they do sound WAY cleaner with a higher head room than the Filteks (although the filteks are the first i'll used for a very cool colored sound) and i believe the summits are smoother than the REDS. i still think the Summits are a GREAT choice. heck, street price is around $800. PLUS.... they are built like tanks... they weigh quite a bit for their size. quality craftmanship.

Riz:

I'd check out the Daking Pre/EQ combo. $1,350 per channel @ VK.
