What studio was it?

I would take a wild guess that it was an SSL 4000 for that era...

Platinum Island had a beat up G series.

Unique has had everything from E's to G's to J's up until the end.

Whos your friend? I'd like to speak to him if thats possible. I'm not suprised that he used the AMS. That LP is really wet sounding, thiers a great deal of ambience and dimension to it all.

Easier question: What machine(s) did Havoc use to make the album's beats? MPC 3000? 60? Throw in the S950?

I don't remember this getting into console choice but definitely a good read:

nice one

didn't know of q-tip's involvement, that's one of my favorite-sounding records.

Classic

That album is 1995.

The drums on that album.

Q-Tip is extremely underrated.

Hell On Earth (with One In Long Run bonus track) was magnificent, one of the best follow ups.

Murda Muzik (Advance) = Fantastic

Prodigy/Mobb Deep features between HEO and MM were all touching classic categories.

Murda Muzik (Retail) was hard beyond belief.

HNIC (outside of We Going Diamond) was vintage MOBB.

Throw in Free Agents, Return of the Mac and America's Nightmare and they have a great catalog.

Infamy was ehh.... Prodigy was obsessed with dissing Sean.

In the articles, they talk about making beats, but not in any detail. I assume they made most of The Infamous in '94, and the 3000 came out in '93. Anyone know if Havoc was rocking the 3000 or the 60? Using the S950 at all? I just find it interesting to know the tools.

From everything I have read about the making of the album:

Havoc - EPS 16+

Q-Tip - SP1200 w/ s950

It sounds like SP1200 with reverb on a few of the tracks (drums) that Q-Tip touched up for havoc though.

I have also heard that Q-Tip was using a lexicon pcm-70 "Tiled Room" effect for reverb on snares (?)

Thanks for the info! In the articles linked, though, they talk about Havoc chopping up a sample and playing it back "on pads." That would seem to indicate an MPC of some sort; either 60 or 3000. Maybe not, though. They might be remembering it wrong or using the wrong word.

Man, in the age of tape, how the hell did Q-Tip get in there and change drums using an SP? Crazy!!

True. Doesnt sound like a 3000 to my ears but maybe so. I have read he was using an EPS 16+ for the album before though.

Q-Tip for certain is the SP1200 and 950 because that was his set-up at the time. You can also tell because of the Low pass 950 filtering on Give Up the Goods, Temp Rising, and Drink away the Pain.

Take drums out of Havoc's original beat, make new drums on SP1200 and sync to Havoc's sampler (instead of 950) with MIDI.

Are you sure about this? I used to filter like that on my eps and asr.
