Ditch JP-8000 for Juno 6 and Matrix 1000?

In lack of any electronic music/keyboard area, i guess I'll ask this here.

I've got a JP-8000 currently, and it's ok, but I just got a Minimoog Voyager so the JP is getting a little negected as I don't need to use it for bass or leads anymore. It's pretty good for pads, but I figure that a Juno 6 and a Matrix 1000 would be better for pads and textures right? I've got quite a few other synths. I'd like to stay with real synths (as opposed to software, except for live) and having analogue ones (Juno and Matrix) wouldn't be a bad thing.

Any thoughts? I mainly just make noise for music (according to my girlfriend)

Well, the Juno 6 is not MIDI and does not have presets. The Juno 60 has presets, is not MIDI, but has a digital communicatoins buss for which you need yet another adapter to use MIDI.

I would get a Juno 60 instead of the Juno 6. But I would get a Jupiter 8 instead of both of them.

Rock on!!

Also, give the Juno 106 a try. I fell in love with its simplicity and its thickness ^^

No money for a Jupiter 8. I'm seeing that I can get a Juno and a Matrix for a little more than the selling price of a used JP-8000.

I don't mind the lack of MIDI on the 6. I've got most of my stuff wired up via midi, but most of the time just record the audio.

I've tried the 106, and it's not bad at all. I've just heard many things about the 6/60 being a little more stable over time due to the chips being used in the 106 failing often and that the filter sounds better in the 6/60.

What about the JX-P8 and the programmer for it? Is that better or worse than the Juno 6?

The JX-10 looks nice too. Or the MKS-70 Super JX. The MKS-80 is just too much green for me.

FWIW i sold my juno 6 and got a 106, because i needed the midi. I've never had stability problems with the 106, but as i remember, the 6 did have that extra fatness in the low end (the trade off was worth it for me though). The jx 10 is a super smooth, 80's sorta synth. The jx10 is basically 2 jx8's in one board. nice pads/strings, eps and bass. not as raw or mean as the earlier juno's and jupitors though IMO.. If you can find a programmer for the jx8 then cool, cause as i remember its onboard panel is of the "membrane" (ie. annoying) kind! Also, if you happen to find the programmer for a jx-3p, let me know, (pg-100 ithink), I've been trying to find one for ages Best of luck.

I own a JX-8P with programmer (pg-800) and can say It's great for pads and cool electronic sounds but I think you would have a hard time using it for leads,, I've tried and It just doesn't sit well in the mix with other synths and samplers.

Yes the JX-3P is nice with programmer (pg-200) and better for bright leads and bells, I don't think It does pads as well as the 8P,,

Although unique in sound; either the 8P or 3P is not quite as fat as the juno 60 or juno 106 IMO.

Qubi Check ebay for the pg-200, there is on on sale now. Its worth it.

You'll need an editor for the Matrix 1000.

I use the Access Programmer and it makes life easier.

There are s/ware editors for it too.
Unisyn, Matrix 2001 etc..

Nice unit.

Juno 6 is nice but have a look at the Roland sh3a....hidden gem and dirt cheap too.

The 106 is thinner sounding than the 60 and the 6.

Tibbon: I would be inclinded to keep the JP8000.
I've owned all the juno's and jupiters over the years and the JP8000 is a wonderful machine.

Although it isn't as fat as a Jupiter 8 is comes reasonably close and you can easily cop a juno sound.
Plus the motion control and ribbon is extremely expressive.

A big plus is finding parts- I needed some parts for my JP8000 a while back and I just went to Roland Switzerland and bought them wholesale.
You often cannot do that with juno's and jupiters or indeed any synths of this age.

I recently sold my JX8P for a Juno 106 and it was definitely the right move. The Juno sounds better imo.

Since we are on the topic:
1. I was thinking of replacing my jupiter 8 with a mks 80 to save space in my studio. Is there a down side to such a swap?

Programming is a pain unless you have a mpg80.
These are all getting a bit long in the tooth- if you have a working JP8 and you swap it for a MKS80 that dies on you then you will be kicking yourself.

Aside from that, not really.

How much do you want for the JP8?
Where do you live?
I might well be interested.
