Bassline velocity...

How do you guys keep your basslines in regards to velocity? I layered a simple sine bassline from Trilogy over a sample and it sounds decent, but I'm tempted to even the midi velocity for that whole track. Is this a common practice?

thats such a variable question...depends on what the sample is, how is the velocity mapped, etc? if i'm layering basses i'll usually **** with that kinda stuff in the mixer.

If the synth patch sounds the same, regardless of the velocity, I would just put it up at full bore to get the best relative Signal/Noise ratio from your synth. But if the patch sounds different at different velocities, you can definitely play with it: either find the sound you like and set all the notes to that velocity, or, mix and match the velocites according to your musical tastes.

Good luck!

depends on how it sounds, but i would probably leave the velocity alone and hit it with a compressor.

I usually keep my velocity at the top....UNLESS it is the type of bass that has attack and texture changes with increase in velocity. Otherwise, 127 baby.
