Oldschool Bass Modules

So I'm putting together a basic beat-making setup not based around a computer. I'm thinking of getting a MIDI master keyboard and looking around the used market for some of the old rack-mounted synth modules that producers used to frequently use for pads, bass, sound effects - you name it. I know these are still far from obsolete but I guess plugins have replaced this type of unit for many producers and I see some of the more famous ones floating around on eBay etc for OK prices.

I've heard many mentions of the Korg Trinity (TR Rack), Nord Lead 2 and Mo' Phatt from hip-hop producers who use them for bass sounds etc. Can you think of some other units that might be great for phat bass sounds?

I use an E-mu E4X for bass sounds (with the E-mu sound libraries).

I have tried all kind of samplers/filters/programs over the past few years... MPCs, ASR, DAWs, Akai rack samplers, etc...

Nothing comes close to the lowpass filters and the bass sounds i'm getting out of the E4X... it sounds very nice!

Studio electronics SE1 and you're finished. If not Jp8000. Nothing else will come close to those

Inexpensive option: Novation Bass Station rack. Not as sophisticated or as 'good' as SE1/303 etc. But nice for putting a boom under kicks, and low end weight layers/mids w/samples.

Super Bass Station not worth the extra money imo. SOS list cheaper than ebay. Bass Station keyboard more likely to be broken/get broken imo.

Used by Rza back in the day.

depends on your budget but I'd definitely go for an analog module for bass if possible. I don't think any of the old school digital stuff was really sought after for its basses.

But if you are on a budget I'd get a microkorg or DX100.

If you start getting near the $500 range though, avoid the digital and get an analog like ATC, Minitaur, Juno 106, etc.

+1 for the Novation Bass Station Rack. Also, check out the EMU Proteus 2000 Rack.

other extra options in the £200-300 price range:
>Shruthi - compact custom made mono synths, come in all different filter flavors and they are cheap
>MoFo desktop module
> Novation Nova desktop module
> Virus C desktop module

none are quite as cheap as the Bass Station rack, but they are all better in my op.

Minibrute might be a great option, if more cash available.

How about a Roland MKS-50?
Use a MIDI editor or keep and eye out for the PG-300.
Maybe an Oberheim Matrix 1000?
