Great River ME-1NV vs UA 610 SOLO

I'm pretty much narrowed down my next purchase to one of these two....

And I am a little torn...let me start by saying I REALLY want a tube amp, although, probably for nothing more than folklore....I do like the smell of a tube tho.

I use pretty much samples (heavily) and virtual instruments exclusively, but am looking for a nice piece for instruments as well in the event tracking becomes necessary.

But in the interim, I will be using this solely for running my samples (especially my drums) and vsti's from my interfaces outs and back in to my DAW....this will be my pre for vocals too... so I want either because they function as a line and a mic pre.

I want a darker sounding pre...and from what I read/hear, the 610's the way to go.

Here's my one hangup though with the 610 I have....otherwise it would be a shoe-in.

The lack of metering.

I am concerned with the lack of the 610's input and output meters. It will be the only piece in my "analog chain" so I don't know how much of a problem this presents.

Plus the 610's about $200 cheaper

Any advice?

I'd still need a rack lol... I know it would be a futureproof investment...but I'm a bedroom hobbyist..I just want one piece that I could put on the desk.

I know people love that Burl though.

I see now.....good looks!

thing is...my heart was set on the 610...but the metering (or lack thereof) is my only issue...

The Burl doesn't have metering either....

I'm not DEAD set...

I'd just like to have some visual confirmation to go along with what I'm hearing...the whole way through.

I'm not a seasoned vet at this shit lol

I meter off Protools. You get a quick feel for the operating levels of pre. especially if you own it.

I have the 610 solo and the A-designs P-1 500 series and guess which preamp does not get used EVER! The 610. If you want a covered, wooly slow transient preamp the 610 solo is for you. Altho, changing the tubes will help round the bottom a little more, but I am looking to sell my 610 don't like or use that at all especially for rap.

Any rapper I used the GR on loved their sound even when still using Rode mics.

Then added in a Soundelux195 and they loved it even more

The Soundelux could be a bit sibilant on one or two people though.

Now there is a choice of Neumann, Soundelux and Charter Oak as condensor mics

Dynamics likes an SM7 will rock through it too

But I really recommend the Great River for your next preamp choice as they all shine through It and add body and 3 d to the sound with great capture of rythm

come on man way more choices then that. for rap you want something smooth, big and warm. Doesn't have to be a tube but you want something open and warm for a mic IMO and in IMO ONLY. Neuman is kool but not the cream of the crop unless you talking u87 which I have my pearlman beats that 80% of the time vocals.

for the price of the gap through in a few more dollars you can get a nice 500 series pre amp. gap is kool but I really think you would LOVE the P1 IMO

@ tealalkos
Bock/soundelux is a great mic. Pick up the soundelux one 2nd hand. I got mine for a great price.
Same mic new company name
Fat switch is useful to get an upfront sound with the vocalist backed frm mic a little.
Kind of hifi but in a good way.
Can be a slight prescence peak on the odd vocalist with great river but changing to the sebatron can help that.
Its a great mic.
I would mos def get two as pair before id get a pair of neumanns for instance

I can't comment too much on U87 versus the Bock U195 as I just picked up the U87 and haven't played with it enough yet.

Only used U87 at other studios where it was really nice paired up with a TubeTech pre

Have only used the Bock/soundelux versus Charter Oak tube and SM 7 etc. at my little place.

But I would suggest demoing the soundelux /bock u195 and any of their other range.

I'll be interested in hearing the u 87 paired up with my GR and sebatron
