Of course MicroTonic is plastic! The TR-808 is plastic, too! And the MachineDrum and Battery, too! We WANT plastic! Otherwise we'd ask a drummer, wouldn't we? |

Any chance you could put a demo up of your Jomox in action? Thinking of getting one but never actually heard them, how do you think it compares to the real thing?

I've mixed a few projects for a client of mine from the bay, and they love to sprinkle 808s over practically everything. On a few of the tracks, they had some super looooooong 808s that sounded really good, and after we mastered their project, they sounded really nice and deep. He actually called me up one day to give props because of the response he got from his peoples as to the sounds of the masters, especially the 808s, but I told him that it all started with them using really good samples (assumed a real TR-808 couldn't do such long 808s) and he said "Oh they're not samples, I programmed all of those using the Waldorf Attak". I didn't see this software VST mentioned, but based on what I've heard, you might wanna check for that one.

I love them BECAUSE they sound artificial (=plastic), as opposed to samples or real drumming. But they don't sound more ore less artificial than Attack or MicroTonic or Ersdrums or whatever VA drum software you might use. Different, but not better or worse. BTW, well, yes, of course I'm insane. Aren't we all?

| Roger Linn's site
Awhile ago I downloaded the TR808 kit from Roger Linn's site for the MPC3000 They sound dope and are my 'go to' 808 sounds I'd imagine even if you didn't have an MPC you could translate the sounds to WAV and rock on- Hopefully they're still up there |

1. I found it difficult to sequence. It seems to involveing holding down the track erase, shift, intrument select and selecting a track. Did you find it to be a challenge to sequence? Perhaps there was something wrong the one I used. 2. The kick seems to be especially useful but I was not as crazy about all the sound. Do you go to the 909 for all its sounds or only for the kick. 3. Any other thoughts?

Okay, here's the list: Korg Rhythm 55 Hammond Vari-64 Fricke MFB 501 Korg Minipops (2 different models) Radel Taalmala (electronic Tabla) Solton Disco 64 Boss DR-110 Hohner Rhythm 80 CRM Rhythm Boy CRM Computer Drums Yamaha MR-10 AK Drummer Ace-Tone Rhythm Ace (2 different models) Roland Rhythm 55 And the more modern ones: Jomox MBase 01 Novation DrumStation (I know it's not analog...) MAM ADX-1 Nihon-Hammond DPM-48 (samples, but dirty ones!) Korg MR-16 (too) Riyaz Master (electronic Tabla, sampled) I used to have a TR-808, TR-909 and Jomox XBase 09, but sold them. No regrets. |

The 808 is THE easiest drum machine to program. Select the sound select the step, simplicity it's self. And I gotta say, if you haven't got room for the 808, make room, chuck out your TV or something.

same..and using my ears i can tell the diffrence too.... but on the airbase I go for everything..Kix, snare whateva..for me its not that important if it sounds exactly the same as a genuine 909. Even my moded 808 is fck tunable so it will never sound the same either..the important thing for me is the caracter of the sound..ie analog and dirt..i make electro and ghettohouse so thats the kind of sound i look for..something nasty if u need something just for kix the new kick drum module from Jomox should be just the thing..What u say Feinstorm..

But in a more non-standard way, which is what I'm after... Yesterday I saw Matthew Herbert sample the crumpling noise of a tin drink can into a 612 and turn it into a hi-hat. On stage in about ten seconds. Now that's what I call creative beats-making! All I ever tried was a kick drum out of Bill Cosby tapping on a microphone. From a CD (don't sue me, Bill, I never used it!). Worked! ...oh, and it's Feinstrom!
