Yamaha HS80m or others?

It's time for some new monitors. I dropped one of my Rokit 8's the other day (I made a thread about it ) and although they seem to sound the same... they don't. The speaker I dropped has a higher tune slightly than the other. I honestly don't even think the drop made this happen, I think these speakers just weren't built well.

So I'm looking at the HS80m's now. What do you guys think?

Also, since I have a KRK 10" sub, do you think I should leave the sub and add the Yamahas, or get rid of the sub also?

Its common to MAYBE pair the hs50's with a sub, but honestly, i think you'd be just fine with the 80's themselves. a lot of times adding a subwoofer does more harm than good, provided you aren't working in an acoustically treated environment. HS80's are a great choice. Flat, and a will provide the necessary low-end response you need.

I do have an acoustically treated room, but it's not doing much for the low end. I can hear the bass very loudly except in my listening position. I guess I will have to move the sub around even if I replace mine. I'll take your advice and try the monitors without the sub first if I buy them. If I need a sub, then I will get one later. Thanks.

I have a KRK Rokit sub - which I'm not fond of but I've learned to live with - and HS50s. Treated room...all is well.

I'm using the HS50's and a sub. It's a good setup.

Just make sure your monitoring interface can switch the sub off. You definitely don't need
the sub engaged at all times.

I don't know... One of my Yamahas is making a weird buzzing noise on kick drum sounds or bass heavy sounds. I searched around and found out these speakers are pretty flimsy (they break often). I found out my KRK's actually work perfect, even though I dropped one.

I'm probably gonna take the Yamahas back, although I do like the low-end response better on them. I have a sub so I can use that for the low end where the Rokits fall off. It seems that the Rokits have a punchier low end, but the transients on 808s kind of cut off, whereas the yamahas keep going for a while. Still, I don't think there's that much of a difference between the two speakers. It's not a night and day difference by any means.

Ok, I played a few more songs with the Yamahas and A/B'd them with my KRKs. I found that the Yamahas have more dynamic range than the KRKs and sound more open. The KRKs, on the other hand, sound compressed in comparison.

I am the master of changing my mind so I think I am going to replace the broken HS80 with a new one and keep the Yamahas.

keeping the sub..

sorta depends on what you're working on and your personal preference. Some folks need to feel the lowend vs just hearing it. Try mixing without it for a week.

Either way, you will need to give time to get used to the new speakers inside your own room(with and without the sub).

I'm anti-sub so go ahead and assume my opinion is bias, but I would sell the sub and KRKs and get the HS80's.
I've listened to both at the shop.
KRK are renound for being coloured and geared towards electronic music and the new RP10 confirms that IMO.

I am using it with unbalanced RCAs, gain @12 straight off Lenovo y550 builtin codec. 4 of 10 on Lenovo sounds in the ballpark of 80-90 dB when a commercial cd like -10..-12 dB RMS is played at full gain in say foobar
