Creating Headroom (in PT)

So I'm making a beat inside PT and my Master fader is peaking around -3dbs.
This is pretty hot. I need to make room for mix bus work.
Can I just activate the "ALL" group and pull every single fader down 5-10 dbs?
Or does the actual audio of every single track have to be trimmed down (like with the clip gain)?

You can do that and it'll be fine. Not ideal though.

Many plugins are designed to work at around -20 dbfs equating to 0 dbvu. So you ought to be sat around that figure with a few peaks up to -10 or similar. Better to shove a trim plug in and start to work on the channels themselves having headroom.

So using a trim plugin is the preferred way to create headroom?
I can just use the clip gain function that PT10 has then, right? It should be the same thing.
If so...
Is there a way I can highlight every single wav block in my session and use the clip gain to adjust them ALL at once?

Another noob question;

Putting a limiter on the Master bus to make the session louder for listening purposes is okay as long as there is no GR happening, right?
I'm currently using the Sonnox Limiter for this... is this limiter transparent enough for this purpose?
Or is there another one that is more transparent and ideal?

Yup to using clip gain. Perfect.

If the limiter is doing nothing then just mix into a buss and then raise the gain of the buss. Having said that a limiter is better as it'll just catch those accidental ones. Most digital limiters, when not doing anything, are only acting as simple digital gain.

+1 for the clip gain or trim plugin.

Even if you are lowering the faders you might still clip the insert plugins before the fader.
