Where can I learn to Synthesize my own drums/sounds?

Hey guys,

Been looking for a place that can get me started in synthesis. I make hip-hop and am looking to gain some knowledge of how to create my own drum sounds, FX, leads, etc. Is there a website, youtube account, or somewhere that can provide fairly in-depth information as to how to do this? If it makes any difference I work in Maschine and Logic 9.

Watch demos on youtube of old analog monosynths. Automatic Gainsay/Marc Doty has some of the most instructional ones. You'll get the basic jist of how to shape a sound. Then you can apply the concepts to your softsynths in logic, just using your mouse instead of hands on knobs. But I'd imagine the methods are the same for any subtractive synth, analog or soft

Well I see everywhere that synthesizing, as opposed to sample packs is the way to go. Hoping more people chime in

There is no "way to go." You'd be surprised at how many of the famous tracks you hear use stock sounds from keyboards/vsts.

The way to go is to use your ears and make what sounds right. It's nice to know how to program a synth... and it's also nice to know music theory. But just cause I don't know music theory doesn't mean I can't play a chord. And just cause I don't know synthesis doesn't mean I can't turn a knob.

Learn about oscillators, filter envelopes, and asdr. Learn about cv programming and basic synth routing. Master bandpass filtering.

and vice versa. you can see all of these synth geeks who know nothing about making actual music. obviously, I'm not much of a synth geek, but I know the basics.

That's only because I have an old analog synth that doesn't have any presets. And I doubt many of the influential hip hop producers or beatmakers make their own drums. To clarify: I'm talking specifically about synthesis. It's certainly common practice and often necessary to stack and layer drums or otherwise modify stock sounds.

there are literally thousands of dope drums out there: libraries, old records, etc. you can certainly learn to tweak drums in Maschine and probably Logic, too.

this is what I was trying to say with my other comment. Good luck, either way.

Although I don't have Reason, I learned about making kicks from this video by KevWest:

Tutorial on How To Make Dirty South 808 Kick/Bass Drums using any synth! - YouTube

I still need to work on it, but after watching this, I was able to make some basic kicks to layer using the stock synth in Reaper.

There are a bunch of other videos on Youtube about making kicks, but many are more EDM oriented, which didn't suit me.

Tons of stuff out there.

I used to get a lot of info from magazines like Computer Music. They have all types of synthesis tutorials every month. I still have the CDs with the video tutorials.

Possibly stuff archived on the sites of those magazines...check it out.
