recording woes

gotta say, i really hate recording. easily my least favorite part of the music making process.

my equipment is satisfactory, as is my room treatment. the difficulty lies in the realm of metaphysical.

part of it is just being my own biggest critic, constantly. the other part is the actual vibe i have while recording. i can't stand everything that goes into it, making sure levels are right, making sure you are positioned right relative to the mic, stopping to go backwards in my DAW to record another take.

all this on top of trying to maintain a consistent vocal tone and good breathing? it just becomes entirely too frustrating for me.

of course i'll grin and bear it, and of course i'm complaining, but does anyone have some words of support or advice on this particular topic? similar stories?

thanks in advance

Hire an engineer who knows and loves what they are doing. That is what some of us live for!

There is a lifetime of learning involved with recording and recording well.

But I don't work with rap or that kind of stuff, just acoustic musicians...

i considered that but really my interest is persevering with own home set up given that ive invested a fair amount of money into it and can't afford studio time. furthermore, i live in a town ruled by cover bands and subsets of metal no one listens to, in which there is only one recording studio.

just really is a terrible amount of effort every time, i've got the air cut to the room so it's always hot and i'm always sweating haha. its just a truly dreaded thing and the only thing stopping me from finishing a project. its become a significant ro******* and im just kinda tired of running from it, just looking for some thoughts to make the ride smoother.

To make the ride smoother, you've got to make some decisions.

Each one of the basic steps in the recording process is necessary. Without one or another, a recording isn't going to happen.

From pulling cable, to patching, to sound check, to gain staging and tweaking, it all has to be done. Get air into the room. Cool it down for a bit before the session starts. Hit the AC again during breaks.

If it's not the temperature that's the real problem, and you REALLY REALLY don't wanna do something, then don't. Get rid of the things you don't wanna do, and use the money from that to upgrade the gear you do wanna use. Then get better at doing whatever that is.

You may see it as a loss, and it more than likely will be. Just chalk that loss up to the game and keep on moving forward.

Peace.

Recording yourself is not a good idea, it just kills off the vibe and your delivery will be lacklustre. You won't get the best out of yourself. Get a friend or something to record you.

Well there is no shortcuts to getting levels correct and making sure the signal chain and gain stages are set right. I'm sure you noticed that every recording session will need to be set differently. So your only choice is to hire an audio engineer to come to you or to go to a recording studio.
