Sampling mp3's...

WhatUP guys!
Sort of strange question: have you ever tried sampling from mp3s?! I never did, but I was wondering...if you chop for example a snare or a kick, would you feel a diff from the same WAV snare-kick?!
What would you say?!

Done it loads- it depends on the source material.
I've done a lot of upsamling of MP3's that I've been given by DJ's and used them in tracks.
Sometimes it works and sometimes not.

Yeah I'm admitting 192-256 kbps bit rate files...you know, those mp3's that sound good, with a little less dynamic range than a WAV file fo'sho, but they sound pretty good. That's why I'm asking you about just chopping little parts(i.e. snare, hihats, kick, etc.) not "melody parts", in which you shouldn't have that sort of lack, you know wh'I mean?
Anyway thanks!

Ehrm- yes but it a bit more complicated than this.
It depends on the encoder- all encoders are not equal.

I prefer to be given AAC or Apple lossless format if I am going to resample back to AIFF.

i mean...hip hop is usually supposed to be imperfect...unless ur going for that polished pop type. dirty it down (specially any artifacts u hear) and you should be fine

Imperfect only in an analog sense. It's still supposed to sound ballsy which is what digital distortion takes away.

yeah it depends almost entirely on the quality of the mp3. i'll sample from mp3 if it's well encoded at 256-320.. anything in the track with frequencies above about 15khz will be most affected, so drums, especially cymbals and hi-hats may be more noticably degraded than if you're sampling a bassline or something.
