Trance / Goa = Some inspiration for you HipHop Producers

Trance and Goa have always been a big source of inspiration since Timbaland's Try Again crazy sawtooth synth, maybe that he's not a pioneer, but imo he's the first one to succesfully slipstream these kind of influences on the Billboard.

I come from a Techno background (and I was producing House music before it became really popular down here in France, back in the 1998). I always have a big love for synth arpegiators.

Here's a excerpt of one that I love, made by "Antiloop", in a 140bpm song called "In my Mind". It was a hit in Europ as far as I remember. Don't laugh at the beat, it's quite simple, yet, I'm sure it'd be still efficient in clubs ^^. Also, you'll hear one of these Kicks that Storch and Lil'Jon overuse. I guess the bottom line is that nobody creates, everybody copies, we all copy the nature IMO (but that's another subject ^^).

Sure that it's not a fresh source of inspiration, but I think the HipHop scene didn't dig in this way that much :

I have been producing trance and progressive house (prog) since 1999, this trance glory days. And i think its one of the reasons I have become really great at mixing, and use a lot of extreme abrasive synths

Drum & Bass is also starting to move in to the american urban production relm as well. Listen to the bass line in Paul Walls - Sitting Side Ways. But considering elements of urban music have been used in drum & bass it only seems natural that it would go the other way.

And also Simon Postford aka "Hallucinogen" is the shit, and my favorite goa/psy producer

I,ll show my age here and say that i started out writing dance and electronica in 1993 with a korg m1,juno 106,roland r8 and yamaha qx 3 hardware sequencer.

I didn,t get a sampler untill 1997.

This background definately influences the hip hop stuff i do .

Your sig says you are only 19. In 1999, you must have only been 11 or 12. Come on, now!

P.S. what's up with you site with the drum samples?

Sorry for the rant on that fool but he has been making the dumbest comments that I have ever witnessed on this site and someone needs to tell him to shut up. He's making this site sound like ughh and it isn't...it's gearslutz, the greatest messageboard on the internet. Anyway, I also got my start making house music and djing in toronto and love the way that I have been able to incorporate (sp?) it into my production. But then again quite a few rap producers started off making electronic music...Just Blaze.

Fact is that even earlier than Hip Hop itself a group out of New Jersey known in the hood as the Parliament Funkadelics. paved the way for electronics in recording groove pieces.

nice one, missing one or two classics in the electro- nu electro genre, missing some modern stuff, clickhouse Berlin style, Frankfurt, Köln, the german stuff (kompakt records, etc. also some dutch (outland records) and belgium (wonka) and english (plinkplonk, sabres of paradise, plaid) stuff that was important in the nineties, and influenced a lot of ppl., so incredibly much has been made, in small pressings, but this is a good resource... eat your heart out you rockers

Not as popular as the 808 ??? You mean in hip hop yes, down here in Europ everybody knows the TR-909. Also I've heard some good sounds from the TR-737. I'll never use any of these drums, but if you know how to mix it and make it bounce, it can be hardcore ^^

I know it's ugly to pop up (really) old posts. But I just heard Timbo's joint with JT "My Love", and the st-uttering synth is indeed something inspired by Trance / Goa.

I smelled it right, I'm a genious (I know I know, ego trip is bad for my health ^^).

Ok back to work now...

yeah people act like it's new, but really timbo has always been inspired by this kind of stuff. Like his syncopation, and the fact that he checked out byork... All of this has been showing up in his music in varying degrees. Usually people that are amazing and constantly creative at one style, are bringing in elements of other styles.

Really I think a lot of it started coming in through pop artists like Britney Spears and her production, and Cher/Madonna etc.. When the Backstreet Boys first came out part of their signature sound was those synths. So it's been evolving over time in pop music, which makes since given that a lot of pop hits are dance hits.

As far as hip-hop is concerned we could probably take it back even further, because when West Coast music was getting really big, one of the things you heard in every other song were these emusic synths, this big leads and stuff, mixed in with the hiphop drums, until it became part of the style

well about electronic influences.. i produce drum n bass on the side and started with that before main stream pop/hip hop r&b production.... release records with Ez rolelrs and bad comapny and such djed as well all from 97-today i have been able to slip some of my Drum n bass influences in some of the main stream production for isntance when i produced on Ginuwine's last album i did an interlude with this heavy dnb reese synth all over the tune.. ginuwine was freaked out by it syaing thast the craziest synth he has heard.. thing is we know the methods have been lurking around for years but not eveyrone who listens to the main stream stuff ever hear that kind of synth production...
all in all coming from an electronic music production background deff helps in a lot of sneaky coo little tricks
