Alot of these ITB guys are missing commenting on an important part in thier signal chain. Soundcard. If you do all this ITB, and are using a shitty soundcard, guess what? Your sound will be shite. If you do go ITB, make sure you get a *pro quality soundcard*....

MPC's...I work with producers that could not live w/o them. They use the pads, do the midi sequences on them, to trigger modules, and use the built in envelopes and add on FX cards too. But the problem with MPC's are samples. You need hi quality samples...shite in, shite out....

On the ITB side, I also work with guys that use Reason, DP, Acid and Logic...these guys use Mach5, Halion, battery and others virtual samplers.

IMHO, check out as many sytems as possible before you drop the cash...you dont want that.." the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" senario..

It provides the balance between software and hardware that was missing in other machines IMO.

If you were raised on logic and never totally got into a MPC, then you'd probably hate it. I was raised on MPC's

i agree and disagree ssl.. the only thing is that i started on logic years ago.. and i just went over to my 4k a few months ago and i don't ever plan to give up my mpc... i think i'll get another one if i wanted one.. but i don't think i'll get rid of my 4k.. i use logic sometimes. but i mainly use my mpc for everything..

Man I honestly dont feel there's anything missing from my 4k when it's used with aksys that would make me want an MPC 5k etc.... (NOTE I DONT USE IT @ 96k though. Higher rates may make me move up, but for now I'm cool.)

Everything I need to do Drumwise can be done on a 4k or via aksys/bias peak (or whatever editor you choose).

I love recording 24 bit files into ptools via apogee converters and editing then exporting and sending them to the drum machine.

I never tried Logic, but I dont plan on it. (UNLESS I GIVE UP PTOOLS)

But I'll still be using my 4k

You should try BFD's GURU. I think it's the closest thing to an MPC (as far as layout, workflow, etc.), but you can do much more with it. Not to mention it's 10 times less than an MPC 4000. I use GURU with the Akai trigger pads. Works great. Download the demo and check it out. In case you were wondering, I don't work for BFD.

it's fxpansion's guru....bfd is another product they make.

ps: i just use my mpc1k for a pad controller and sampler. i don't even use the sequencer to bang out full tracks. i find it 100x easier/more productive to do that shit in FL studio or SX 3

BTW , I bought the MPC4k for around $3800us, then sold it a year and a half later for $2500us .

Vision was my first Mac programme i worked with , it also had pattern based sequencing like an MPC60 ! Lastly Apps like Logic , P.tools etc are not about resale value but about advancements in technology that help us get our work done easier with more options .

I understand peoples attachment to MPC's( I bought one)and they have made great beats/music in the past and will continue to do so with producers that grew up with them , like Rodney Jerkins who still uses an MPC3000 last time i checked but that was his era .

Cheers
The MPC works in more than just pattern mode, this is a very common misconception. The MPC allows for loop based sequencing as well as linear sequencing. Secondly copying and pasting on the MPC is just as fast as on a computer, it works under the same principles, select region and copy and paste. Now if you are speaking on micro editing single notes, the computer will be faster for this, but at the end of the day, the MPC forces you to play your stuff correctly and not relying on moving the notes to what the grid says is correct. There are alot of things that appear to not be on the MPC that are inherently native to a software DAW that people complain about, you really have to learn your machine. Music has never been about how well you can see it. The MPC takes away the "this looks good" part of Making Beats.
