You can use M/S EQing to Subtractively EQ from the center to let vocals sit, then treat the sides with EQ for whatever else you need. Just a thought.

I just want to add that there is a similar thread in the Electronic Music section right now that might be ineresting:

Making pads sound transparent

The Dimension D (I use the UAD plugin, not the hardware) is a great effect for pads, use on a send, not on an insert... blend to taste.

Depends what you are looking for, but this almost always sounds nice.

Sometimes I will pan them dead center, sometimes I will leave them stereo, sometimes I will pan them hard left or hard right. It all depends on the record.

I do find often that records I mix have stereo pads that simply aren't wide enough and I have to widen them. Often I will just do a mid-side adjustment, or I'll do a hass delay. Whichever works better. I have other tricks for making a pad wider and get it out of the center, but those are the two most common. I think a lot of "beatmakers" really don't understand how to make sounds so that they work with vocals because pads with stuff piled up in the center is a common problem I run into while mixing.

I like to process pads as M/S by digging out midrange from center channel to leave room for lead vox and more important channels and HPF to make room for bass and kick, and for the sides it's usually HPF even higher to keep remaining bass centered and a high shelf for nice stereo in the upper range. It all depends though. Dimension D is nice as already mentioned.

Multing it... high passing it aggressively... putting a panning automation sometimes but otherwise getting rid of the center information some more (without overdoing it as it changes the tone), boosting the sides... and adjust the level of the mult as I see fit.

I may do the same thing but for the center info... basically processing center and side differently...
most vst allow for different eq and/or compressor setting but I like to play with some other effects as well...
