Regardless of whether you like the music or not, Dre's Chronic 2001 is the best i've heard.

you wanna talk well-mixed hip hop??
besides the greatness in the lyrics.....

Illmatic, ALL EPMD stuff (my fave being Business As Usual), Pete Rock/CL Smooth stuff (Mecca & the soul brother), Naughty by Nature had some excellent mixing, The Roots (Illadelph, Do You Want More)....

the list is huge....but start from late 80's, to circa 1996 hip hop to see how mixing is supposed to be done.

Well, since we are reviving this topic....

Anything mixed by Jimmy Douglass is usually head and shoulders above everything else... Listen to songs like Justin Timberlake "Cry Me A River" and all the other Timbo stuff! Simply amazing... Wow, dare I say JT's was one of the best mixed "hip hop" album in the last 5 years...

The Dre stuff is cool, too... The typically sparse production allows for hotter levels. "2001" is a must have in the CD case for getting acclimated to monitors.

Tony, how do you Figure Justin Timberlake is "Hip Hop" in the same way Dr.Dre
is??

That mix of that song is f'n sic for sure. That record has hip/hop underlayings to it, but I don't know if I'd call any of the songs true hip/hop songs.

Some of my fav mixes are "Nuttin But A G Thang" and "Who am I (What's my name)". Who Am I has some of the sic'est bass lines. Those whole albums are mixed well, but those songs stand out to me.

There was a scarface record I used to use as a ref disk for my car audio system. It was incredibly mixed. Insanely clean (no distortion artifacts) and I could crank it up really loud without it killing my system. Amazing sounding record sonically. I think it was The Untouchable.

Digable Planets always had really great mixes too. Not sure how "hip/hop" they are considered though.
Cool thread.

I never said it was hip hop in the same way Dre is. I was trying to show that Jimmy is a great engineer. Anything produced by Timbo he mixes, for some reason that album popped in my head.

I dont know if imma get bashed, but the dj quik album trauma was the most open aitry and clear album ive heard. I like how all the dr.dre albums sound like their all mixed with no panning, everything sits in the middle.

D.O.C - Tha Formula

For some reason "The Message" is one of the loudest records I have. I'm not sure if its the song or just the pressing (or some of both), but that joint will make everything sound soft in comparison.

A couple of my favorites are De La Soul - Buhloone Mind State and just about anything by The Roots

It may have been more in the mastering, but UN or U Out by The UN was a sad victim of the loudness war... it sounds like it's trapped under a thick sheet of glass. Too bad. Nice record.

Doggystyle

I think Chronic 2001 is well mixed, only thing are the vocals. They sound not loud enough for me.

Compton's Most Wanted - Music To Driveby

Exceptionally well mastered and recorded (not quite The Chronic standards..), I really like the way the stereo imaging is done by the way all the samples are panned and sometimes slightly offset from each other, percussion and otherwise.

uhhh....not the best description, but it's a great album and worth a listen.

I'm suprised it hasn't been mentioned at all....

But Tupac's Makaveli album always sounded good to me.

I think Dear Mama sounds amazing....

I have to agree I love ALL of timbaland's mixes even better than Dre's, whether Hip-Hop or R&B.
