Loud Intro

It seems to me that a lot of songs have a loud intro that fades down.

For example a loud first kick but all the other kicks and snares following
are half as loud.

Or the whole intro is loud up until the first snare comes in.

But it usually doesn't sound too awkward.

I realize it's a "trick" to make you perceive the whole song is louder, but would anyone care to elaborate more?

Thank you for your time.

you have any links to examples?

i know chris carter talked about it few times on here, seems to be quite common.

could also be pumping from radio compression, i mostly notice it when listening to the radio.

Never noticed that with EDM. I guess there is not much room left in the loudness to do that

It's a compression thing.... You'll hear it on a lot of songs where the intro doesn't start with the drums.... Drums kick in and hit the compressor threshold so everything else gets turned down.... In a lot of cases you can barely hear the instrument from the intro..... I always assumed it was laziness on the engineer's part but it seems like it's acceptable now.... I don't recall hearing this phenomena in the past though......

That's why volume automation is key during mixing in the over compressed age we live in. So quick to just draw it in or automate the output of a plugin/buss.

A nice way to combat this I found is to automate the instrumental intro down a dB or two and then go back to full volume once the beat starts (and where the compression will naturally dip those instruments a few dB)

Yeah, it's just compression. I often do this by accident on my first mix. You don't have anything hitting the compressor hard so you are not getting much gain reduction, if at all. Simple as that.
