i've always listened to hip hop. a few months ago a friend of mine sent me a beat he produced with software and asked me to rap on it. i wanted to try and get into producing beats, if anyone could give me advice i'd appreciate it.

It seems that this place is very advanced. When I started, two years ago, I found s much useful newbie info in "futureproducers.com"

If you are really just getting started, a groovebox/drum machine like the Korg er-1 won't kill you financially and will be easy to make what my brother lovingly calls "oom-pah beats" on. There are others (yamaha & roland) finding refugee status from the techno revolution that has yet to hit, you can find your inspiration from not only their capabilities but their limitations- at least the limitations will show you what you really want.
I got the synth version, an ea-1, for 70 bucks and it is very fun to noodle with.
If you are beyond this advice, I bet you will find gobs of advice as you go forward.
