I don't know which Mic to pick for rapping

My voice is in middle range really, I'm gonna be doin 90% rapping and 10% singing, so want a mic for both purposes. (Hip Hop and r&b).

I've searched everywhere but can't find a place to tests mic, and I don't have time to be waiting WEEKS and WEEKS just to be disappointed and returning etc, so just wanna make sure I pick the right mic!!

I want a condenser mic more than a dynamic (don't want the sm7b I don't 'think'). Now I know a mic sounds different for each voice, but I just kinda need, the mic that you just don't think it'd disappointed people, it'll sound good on most sources. What would you pick?

Budget is up too 500 bucks...

Guitar Center and other stores with variety will allow you to test microphones. I would recommend looking a wee bit harder to find a place before you just buy what someone off of this site recommends.

What does your voice sound like? And what other gear are you using? Some people here can throw out suggestions.

On the budget youre working with its super hard to recommend a mic without testing it on your voice. Automatically I always think if you don't know what mic to get a u87 is a great starting point because I've heard very few vocalists who don't sound nice on a u87 but of course the price tag is hefty. If you can't find a place that will let you test then you might just have to take a dive and return it if it sucks.

I agree, the u87 is a great one-stop mic for most things, so if your budget is low, why not look for one of many cheap 'clones' - I used to have a Rode NT2 (discontinued) which was fantastic. I'm lucky enough to have moved into high-end gear now, so I'm a bit out of touch with what's out there, but a quick search should help.

Remember: a good mic will help a bit, but if you've got a great style and great lyrics, you could use anything. I bet Jay-Z and Kanye etc would still sound awesome using the built-in mic on a laptop...

ok I just looked harder and I "think" I've found one placed which have a few audio technica's (not the 4047 unfortunately and a few rodes, which were the main brands I was interested in anyway. So I might give it a shot, I don't even know what I'm gonna say lol. Gonna feel pretty rude just trying it and walking out :/

yeah the u87 is like THE mic, but way out of my price league. Is the NT2 the same as the NT2A? because I can get that. I was thinking of getting the 4047 since it's also like a u87 clone but I dunno, when I heard it on the site it sounded a bit too 'thick' and almost mumbly, I dunno what it was but just didn't sound the way I predicted it would, still willing to give it a shot though maybe.

I don't even have a laptop mic or mic at the moment lol, I dunno it's bang on in the middlle. In a sense, it's kinda the tone kanye has about, just not his vocal style. And I'm using the focusrite scarlett 2i2 interface and reason

Why is the Sm7b out of the question? It's great for Rapping and singing on. You just better pair it with a quality high output pre.

You are a paying customer man. They should let you check them out in the store before you buy them. If not, check out the return policy and take them home and test them and keep returning until you find one that suits your taste.
