I've not said that an EQ can emulate a preamp but he aleady has a preamp and want another sound ,so why buy another preamp he don't needs it.

Actually, the very first variable equalizers were created to improve movie playback in theaters in the 1930's. Before that, fixed eqs were used by Bell telephone to correct for signal transmission losses over long distances.

Absolutely true.

Tho certain GOOD eqs can impart a color, even by just running a signal through them flat.

But they DO sound nice! I've never heard a C800g sound as good as when it was run through one of those...

Your question is kind of like asking us if you should salt your food or not. Its really all about personal taste.

Most of the time we just use the SSL console pres in the big rooms, but some producers have racks of nice stuff like APIs and Chandlers in their writers rooms instead of a board.

You really cant go wrong if you decide to buy a rack of APIs or neves or whatever. If you have the money then do it.

I think that I've heard the movie theater thing before. I wasn't aware of the telephone application though - thanks.

For some reason in the rock world it's a very popular methodology to use the same pre on everything on a record, but the hip-hop folks don't. Are the hip-hop guys just slow on the uptake? I dunno. On PSW you see big engineers talk about the 'one pre' thing all the time.
I'm a rap/hip-hop producer/engineer here n the states most people I kno track with one pre amp .. I understand the different flavors and all but how many do u need for one song .. I can see using different amps for album creation i.e. different sounding songs using the pre amps needed to bring out the song .. n remember rap music has the lowest budgets out of the popular music category . We don't have the time and luxury to track different sounds thru different amps because "oh the strings sound better thru an api" I would think u rock boi's would get that luxury I'm pretty sure ur budgets our higher then ours
