"Down On Me" Jeremih and 50 Cent - Mix Session Video

Hey guys and girls,
G Unit gave me permission to do a free video lesson surrounding how i mixed "Down On Me" for Jeremih and 50 Cent. I ended up creating a series of 3 Webisodes showing how i mixed the song from faders down to finished, also showing how and why i am doing each part of the mix, from what plugins i am using and why, to how i'm approaching the overall mix.

Episode 1 focuses mostly on the music mix, Webisode 2 and 3 (not out yet) focus more on vocals and finishing elements like mix bus treatment. So, its free, lots of great info for you, here's a link......

Enjoy!!!

Let me be the first to say thank you for your time and effort. I have not watched yet. But soon as I'm done mixing I will check it out. *thumbs up*

I was having doubts.

Much appreciated Ken! I started watching it, but I'm going to wait till I can listen on my monitors to finish. I was missing to much by watching on my laptop. lol

I thought you use a Matrix? Am I wrong or did you move up to the AWS 948 (I believe that's what I saw) recently?

Thanks ken. Can't wait to watch it.
If you don't mind me asking how long did it take to mix it?
With all the subtleties in there I would imagine it took a while.

Props for the video. Pro insight into the work is always appreciated. It's amusing to see these PT sessions where general consensus is that a beat is simple, but on the screen is an unexpected number of tracks.

Took me 5 hours start to finish to mix the original, with 50 Cent sitting right behind me on the Red Couch

and that was my mix, completely unmastered, straight from my studio to radio and CD

LOL
5 hours for a mix like that is just crazy to me. And then...you didn't even need to master it.

Looking forward to the next video.

Did you switch up your Event monitors with those Adams? Not that it matters but it was one of the first things that caught my eye when watching the vid.

Yes, i tried the A7's and really loved them, so i switched. I also switched my sub. I used to run a JBL LSR 12P, now i run a pair of JBL 4312 Subs. My room SHAKES!!! but the best part is i have the subs dialed in to be accurate. Having two though gave me probably another full octave on the sub.

Well, i assure you, having 50 Cent sitting behind you while you mix can really make you focus on the task at hand. I felt like i was in the zone, Michael Jordan in the finals. 109 track mix in 5 hours, including cutting a verse with 50. It was just one of those times where my instincts really led me perfectly and 50 asked for almost no changes on the mix, and he left at 5:30am with a big smile on his face and high praise.

50 knows what moves him and what doesnt. 50 knows what sounds great to his ears and what doesnt. He doesnt reach out and start tweeking knobs (at least he didnt touch my mix) but if he has an opinion he shares it. 50 is hands down one of the most talented hard working artists i have worked with.

Perfect timing Ken - I'm currently working on my first mix. It doesn't seem as formidable after watching that video. I have a long ways to go, but this definitely helps out quite a bit.

Big props to G Unit as well for letting you do this and can't wait for the 2nd and 3rd videos!

Ken, thank you for sharing this video! I see you used Waves MaxxBass on 50's vocals - would you elaborate a little about what was the purpose of it?
