Kind of upsetting, the library should have stayed with his daughter.

I think it's cool, as like as they don't charge an arm and a leg for his copy of a dollar bin record. When I die, I want all my records to go back to the crates, famous or not, for the next generation.

This isn't true. The records are not for sale. I called the store and asked.

Well, true or not, the article does state that some of the proceeds will go to the J Dilla Foundation and he did get in touch with Stones Throw so that's good. I do think the cat probably should have waited until his mother responded (which I hope is the reason it may not be true at the time).
Either way, in theory I don't see it as being a really bad thing.

Nah, I was a little short in my reply. It's true he has the records. They're not on sale yet. I should have been more explicit!
I agree that it's not a bad thing for them to be sold. I think it's better for the records to come into the possession of people who will cherish them than for them to collect dust.

I guess it isn't that big of a deal.... I'm sure Dillas mom will still get wind of it. They belong to her really. Hopefully that is what he is holding out on selling them for.

| She has no legal claim to what was in the locker. It sounds like he was informed that he would get more for the 800pc collection as a whole rather than selling each one separately.
He'll put the word out and then someone will drop a big sum to have they consider THE record collection at an artist auction.

He tried contacting both Stones Throw and Dilla Foundation but they didn't reply. So I'd do the same if I was him, or keep them if you're a big fan.

Facebook status from the record store:
The records will be on sale again in the future. Mrs Yancey doesn't want 8000 records, she needs $$. With the money the Foundation phone number and email will be fixed for a start. BTW, she wasn't answering our calls or emails (like we claimed) because she told me she has many people trying to scam her, she thought it was another scam. She appreciated everything we are doing being there are a lot of people who want to speak for her and the foundation but don't help financially. She said she doesn't even turn on her computer because all the negative BS, like what has happened here with heresay. She was great and has a great lawyer now representing her and the foundation. We are excited to put the records she can't use in the fans hands, and cash in her hands she can use!

^^^^^ I'm sure somebody got their hands on the good stuff....If you look at Dillas body of work and the samples he used...it's really nothing crazy or THAT obscure. Some of it is but most of it is just where and what he took from those songs and how he flipped it. Some of them he didn't even flip he just looped.
Like "Best That Ever Did It" on Dillagence was a Moments sample...who hasn't tapped the Moments?
Or how about the Bye/ So Far To Go beat? He sampled the Isley Brothers....
Nothing serious...
They even mentioned in the article that there are a bunch of rare jazz records from the Tribe label....and most of that shit is some hard bop jazz that is totally unsampleable.
Just a bunch of hype if you ask me.

In one article they said that there were some beat tapes also in the storage unit. That takes the whole thing from "dilla's cast-off records" to "valuable Dilla collectibles" and quite possibly "newly discovered Dilla beats". Where's Antique Roadshow when you need them.

You're a straight clown, you clearly don't understand the deep science of a piece of vinyl as well as the blood, sweat and tears that producers go through over the years to obtain certain records that are priceless. Money comes and goes and in this circumstance the currency doesn't mean shit, the history in them records do and in my humble opinion it is something that should have stayed with his seeds that are the next generation.
Peace,

Luckily I work right next to this store. I got to go in on my lunch break yesterday when the news broke. I got 6 vinyl with the dilla record stickers on em (couldn't find much, most was gone). Some guy was hogging most of them with 50+ copies in his arms while I was in there, then as I'm checking out he asks the employee if he can put them back because obviously he didn't have enough cash for all of them. Most were $8-20 and priced accordingly. I'm a huge Dilla fan and Donuts is the reason I started listening to instrumentals and eventually producing. I remember the day Stones Throw posted the info that he passed and I couldn't believe it. I had just began listening to him the month before.
I was going to stop in again today to see what was going on, but decided not to. Took a pic of the sticker on the vinyl - Instagram |

Peace,
Shakim Allah | I guess I don't understand either...
It doesn't matter how much blood sweat and tears went into it. It's like they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", so is value. Something is only worth as much as someone is willing to value it. Its normal to have an opinion but to call someone a "clown" because they don't value something as much as you is very egocentric. Personally I try not to put so much value on material objects..
