| Gear nut | more weight ! hi mates, i m working on my drum and bass album and a hip hop album i produce these few days, i have worked on spatialisation, using panning for dry and wet soundz, automation, reverb, etc my mix is more clean and i better hear each tone of separated element, a good point for me but now, i feel that drumz need more "weight" even if i layer drums, compress, eq, sometime distortion separated elements for equing, is there sensible areas (hz) to work on kick, snare to have a more full sound? i have worked on enveloppes(attack...decay) but i would like to get more density i use uad plugs, some waves or logic, i m waitin for a clone of streo buscomp ssl and vintech eq, but the experience learned me gear is nothin without knowledge so if you have ideas to get a more full sound on drums especially, more density it would be nice thanks mates |

| Lives for gear | Add some reverb with predelay and/or timed delay to your drums and send the "wet" drums to a subgroup with a pumping compressor - add to taste to the mix... n |

Set up a Bus with a Stereo Delay, a Platinum Verb and a Compressor. Now send the Snare, some HiHats/Percussion and a touch of the Kick to that Bus via the tracks' Send. In the Stereo Delay, you can switch between "musical" note-denominations - set to 16th-notes and little feedback. (mix to about 20%) Use a short (0.7s) reverb. (mix to 100%) Set the Compressors sidechain to your Bus (now it will react to what you are sending to the bus...) fastest Attack and Release set to a quarter-note (look up the time in the Delay...) switch off AutoGain. Lower the threshold for at least 12dB of GainReduction. The rest is up to you... play with the Hi/Lo-cut filters in the Delay ...try different Reverbs, different Delay-times (slightly offsetting left and right for a wider image) ...different thresholds and release-times from the compressor ... get it grooving! Now lower the Volume of the Bus until you have created some subliminal space for your Drums... Quote:

| Gear addict | Yesterday I just put the drumtrack through some distortion unit. The vocalist wanted the "Beat"to be very loud. The distortion made it really loud. But not to much to screw up the sonics... Kind regards, Harrie |

| Gear nut | yes, really thanks mates ok for the bus with reverb delay and comp but what don you mean by sidechain on the bus?, i chek: i send separated elemnt to a bus for dry and another for wet on the wet i use this chain: delay, reverb and a compressor why should i use a sidechain?( i use sidechain for kik snare and for effect on sounds, exemple i sidechain a lopass filters on pads with the bus of my hats, each time a hat play it twisted my pad whith the lo pass, like an arpeggio on lo pass) thanks to niko, my name is niko too ps: i search for a disto unit, i m fed up with logic distos, i m on a psa 1 sans amp(350 euros) do you have ideas for hardware or softwares? |

| Gear nut | ok man, really interesting i compress the wet bus by sidechaining with the "dry"bus, dry is master ans "wet" is the slave, ok, i use a bus for reverb, i have even tried to compress but never tought to sidechain, i just was doin a mix dry and wet so i have a question, last week, in a dnb track, i have done a copy of my drumbus with a 1176 squash on it and then i have done a bounce stereo with the natural and the squashed beat(that i have equed to well fit with the original break) do you think its better to sidechain my squashed version by the "drybus"? i m gonna check that tonite thanks, niko(las) |
