002 Firewire/Midi problems.

Whatsup all, I've been having a few weird problems with my 002 and the firewire connections and midi. This pretty much all started after I upgraded to a G5 and PT 7 so I wanted to see if anyone had any advice. Oh yeah, Im just getting into using softsynths and the midi side of PT so please excuse me if the following problems have stupidly easy answers.

Problem 1: Firewire

This problem only really happens when I start running a few softsynths. It will be playing fine and then it will just lose firewire connectivity and an error screen will pop up in pro tools. Sometimes it fixes itself other times I have to turn it off and back on and reopen the session. Rarely happens unless I'm running like 3 or more softsynths.

Problem 2: Midi

I just ran into this today since I was using battery for one of the first times. Im sequencing all the drums on my mpc and triggering battery with it and Its got some fast hat reps going on (dipset, south style) and they randomly mess up while in the fast parts like the midi goes off for a second. Anyone got any tips for this? maybe something with a buffer or something...

Your firewire problem sounds like the widely known (yet best kept secret from digidesign) Power Harness issue. Your power harness is the other end of your power cord that rests on metal pins inside your 002/002r. If you have a unit which serial number ends in (A-F) you are a prime candidate for this issue.

There should be a class action lawsuit because this is a manufacturers defect and all units ending in those serial numbers should have been recalled and replaced. Digidesign Cust Support should have no problem sending you a new power harness (that you must install yourself as well as sign a waiver excluding them if you mess up your machine when installing, it is also my understanding they are supposed to give you the option of shipping your unit in, free of charge for them to do the repair themselves) what they will send you is a new power harness (molex connector) which supposedly has the metal sockets in it to prevent corrosion to the metal pins inside the 002r.

A short term fix is to open the unit yourself, disconnect each wire and clean the corrosion from the pin and connector. Some just disconnect and reconnect a few times to get rid of the corrosion.

Go to duc.digidesign.com (Digidesigns official user forum run by digidesign personnel) go to search>type in Power Harness or firewire connection, you will see thousands of posts pop up explaining how this happens to people after owning the unit 9 months, some after a year and a half, others within 3 months.

Call digi tech support or report your problem to the admin @ the DUC. They should be able to get you going. There are other problems that mimic the power harness issue and the unit still needs to be repaired.

Good Luck

power harness

shouldn't be the harness or power supply, replaced both of those like almost a year ago because I was having way worse problems. Anyone know if it could be the firewire on my G5?
