Mojave 201 FET vs JJ Audio Greyhound

Ok, we got one another tuff decision to make..let me Start off and say that we use a Focusrite Saffire Interface, good Cables and a descent Vocal Booth.

Most of the Rappers we Record (now and in the near Future) are Male Vocals, (also a few Female Singers) Pretty strong rap Vocals, but also alot of smooth Voices. Imagine you would need to Record Rappers like Ice Cube, Mystikal, Bone, Krayzie bone.. those type of Vocals (not Performance).. which Mic would you choose? I cannot Order both noway, also I'm on the Westside of Germany so its not that easy to send a mic like the JJ Audio back...I've read a lot of stuff about both mics but noway to make a decision yet.., what scares me a lil is that the Mojave 201 FET can (just) handle 120dB, I know thats almost like a Jet Engine but anyway..sure I can lower the Volume on the Pre but I don't know if that makes much sense..it will not Clip at the End of the Chain but maybe the Mic itself

I've read so much that I ended up totally confused..I'm looking forward to uprade our SPL Tube pre amp to the GAP 73 pre.. so far..hope someone can help..and please no AT 4040, that thing is harsh..ouch..

Gracias

Good Question!

Hi Ghostmanagement, I don't do rap. Just classic rock, folk, and country, but I am also curious about the similarities and differences between these mics.

There are several clips on GS that showcase the JJ Audio Greyhound. I haven't seen any that showcase a rapper, but there is a good Jazzy/RnB type vocal clip, with a backing piano track, somewhere on here that I once heard.

I have not yet been able to find a singing, male vocal clip done on the Mojave 201. However, in my searches I did find this guy rapping on the Mojave 201, which may be of some interest to you in particular. Below is the link to his video from the Mojave Audio website:

Keng - My Nation "Sponte Sua" on Vimeo

Hopefully, someone with some Greyhound and MA-201 vocal clips will step in and enlighten us both

oh, and...

One more thing... when you search for the Greyhound, you might want to use the term "JJ audio v67". As the MXL v67 is one of the most common mics modded to make the Greyhound. That is the term that turned up the most results for me, both on GS and Google.

Good luck!!

I wouldn't let the spl rating scare you. Personal preference, Greyhound. But you'd also have to wait for it to be built.
