| Gear maniac | Online Session Sharing.
Say I wanted to make a beat with someone who lives in another state. We both have the same DAW and all of the same plugins. Is there a plug-in that lets us link our sessions and add midi from both ends of the connection?

You know I don't think this exists, but I was wondering the other day why this isn't being talked about. I mean how sick would it be to collab in real time from two or more parts of the world on a session. I hope someone proves me wrong, because I want whatever DAW lets you do this.

Yeah, its coming. I think a few attempts have been made but midi is actually pretty behind the times. I think when Osc becomes more prominent the online music making will really blow. As it is though, just throwing 320kb mp3's back and forth is not difficult or all that time consuming. I mean its a process like any other, But I don't see midi/osc controlled over the internet shaving hours off anybody's work. It might be like 15-30 min. and in all likely hooh youll be paying a premium for that.

I think there has been something like this before, where multiple musicians could all jam together at the same time and record, like a global online band. The problem came with the latency. The bassist wouldnt hear the drummer until a sec later and he would be off time. Then the guitarist would hear the drummer a half sec later and be off time , etc. That was a few years ago though, maybe now with better technology it could be possible. I think it would be the ultimate holy grail of the digital recording medium. Sending tracks back/forth for overdubs is great now, but to be able to see and play along with another musician from across the world in real time would be ****ing sweet. |

Virtual jamming would be amazing... I wonder when it'll happen?

There was a thing called Rocket Network that came bundled with an old version of Cubase (I think it was SX). It allowed collaboration through the net. It fell flat on it's face from what I remember. This was about 10 years ago. High bandwidth connections are much more widespread these days. It might work now. However, I imagine there is a pretty narrow set of people that would use this kind of thing.
